Lancaster University's Beyond Cyber Security series went out with a bang yesterday with our last event of 2024! We were delighted to welcome to our stage the brilliant Robin Ince, comedian and co-host of the Sony Gold Award-winning BBC Radio 4 podcast The Infinite Monkey Cage! Robin took us on a thoughtful and provocative journey through art, sci-fi, poetry, and music to critically explore what it means to be human in the age of AI. His talk captured how imagination, emotion, and creativity define us as a species, prompting a crucial question: What might we be losing as we remove more of the human from thought-processes, decision-making and creative processes? Will it ultimately be us that start to fail the Turing Test? In the panel session that followed, Daniel Prince Laetitia Sterling MCMI ChMC and Joanna Munnelly (Foskett) took a closer look at the themes of Robin’s talk and challenged him with thought provoking questions like: Can AI be an enabler to spark new thoughts and creativity, rather than something that diminishes it? A key message coming from these discussions was a reminder that AI is a tool and its effectiveness depends on us. To use it wisely while preserving what makes us unique as humans, we need to get much better at critical thinking in the age of the machine. Thank you to Robin Ince for being with us for our final event of the series and making it such a thought-provoking session to end on. Thanks to our brilliant panelists for their thoughtful questions, and to our wonderful guests for contributing to such meaningful discussions throughout.
