The controversial paper that stoked enthusiasm for the now-disproven idea that a cheap malaria drug can treat COVID-19 has been retracted — more than four-and-a-half years after it was published. It's the most-cited paper on COVID to be withdrawn (and the second-most-cited paper ever to be retracted). My story for Nature Magazine on this and the wider background. https://lnkd.in/en5s6MbT

Fake or flawed studies are polluting systematic reviews in medicine and other fields - but how do you spot them? For Nature Magazine, I report on a large collaboration studying Cochrane reviews with the aim of making a short checklist of signs of 'untrustworthy' research -- and on the automated integrity tools emerging to help check studies. https://lnkd.in/e-Y-atZy

I have been so fortunate to interview sci-fi icon and climate visionary Kim Stanley Robinson - of the Mars trilogy and The Ministry for the Future, among many others gems. I found out how he feels about some of the climate catastrophes he made up in his books becoming reality, how he talks to young people about climate dread, his thoughts on AI consciousness... and why the heroes of his stories are often scientists! I was also curious about why he sent a psychologist to the red planet in the Mars trilogy: "I had a lot of fun with Michel, the only French person and the only psychologist in the first group of 100 people to colonize Mars. Naturally, he goes crazy." :D OK no more spoilers! Read his interview in Nature Magazine https://lnkd.in/ePWPSRQn

👇 Such elegant vomit must be highlighted! Just the right amount, enough to be noticed but not over-the-top, a difficult balance achieved for this week's Nature Magazine cover, where the word 'poo' maintains a level of gravitas. Thanks to artist Marcin Ambrozik for quickly turning around our request to tweak the vomit just a bit (has to be said, one of the more enjoyable pleas I've made to an artist in my career), along with author Martin Qvarnström and editor Henry Gee. Link to the fantastic paper on fossilized dinosaur poo and vomit in the comments.
