From Saint Nicholas to Krampus to KFC on Christmas Day, Professor Thomas Rhys Smith explores the seasonal traditions from around the world. 🎄🎁 In an article for UN Today Professor Smith, from our School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies, explains: “Christmas is a truly global phenomenon. For many, Christmas looks very different from Hollywood’s imaginings. In Greece and Cyprus, Saint Basil does the honours on New Years Eve, whilst in other parts of Italy, the task falls to Befana, a witch who distributes goodies on the eve of Epiphany. Or Krampus – the demonic figure who first terrified children in Germany as a spooky foil to St Nicholas.” “Regional Christmas food variations are even more numerous. On Christmas day in Ethiopia, after a 43 day fast, you’re likely to enjoy some doro wat, a spicy chicken stew topped off with boiled eggs. Or if you’re in Tokyo, there’s one traditional festive food that you have to try: a KFC bucket. Just make sure to get your order placed months in advance.” To explore more global traditions: https://lnkd.in/eayrBhbD CreativeUEA #ThisIsUEA #Christmas24 #ChristmasTradition #ChristmasSeason

Kirsty Harrison, Associate Professor in Speech and Language Therapy at UEA, has been awarded the first NIHR MND Association Doctoral Fellowship in motor neurone disease (MND) research by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), in partnership with the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association. Her three-year fellowship, will focus on co-developing a self-management intervention for people living with MND: “This research is about making eating, drinking, and swallowing easier, safer, and more enjoyable while giving people more control over these aspects of their lives.” MND is a neurodegenerative disease, characterised by loss of motor neurone function. Kirsty’s research aims to improve care with an accessible, practical resource that people living with the disease, their loved ones, and healthcare professionals can rely on for support. Did you know that film can be used as much more than simple entertainment? 🎬 Taking her expertise from film theorist to filmmaker, Professor Eylem Atakav from our School of Media, Language and Communication Studies delves into the impact of her documentary on child brides in Turkey, showing how she has used her films to influence government policy and train health professionals who work with vulnerable groups. Professor Atakav said: “That’s what’s so fascinating to me about the power of film: four women who have never left their own villages, let alone the country, travelled through their stories to the UK. There is a lot of value in theorising in academia, but there is also a huge amount in engaging with the public – these actions help to create some kind of societal cultural change.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/eAkBEZyN CreativeUEA #ThisIsUEA #FilmAcademia #FilmStudies #DocumentaryStudies #ResearcherLife

ClimateUEA are pleased to share this wonderful poem written by Professor Sam Illingworth (Department of Learning & Teaching Enhancement Edinburgh Napier University) which was inspired by Dr Peter Sheehan and Professor Karen Heywood’s (University of East Anglia, School of Environmental Sciences) study on the Ross Ice Shelf released last month. The research revealed for the first time how a major Antarctic ice shelf has been subjected to increased melting by warming ocean waters over the last four decades. The study, which was a result of their autonomous Seaglider getting accidentally stuck underneath the Ross Ice Shelf - suggests this will likely only increase further as climate change drives continued ocean warming. The poem can be read here: https://lnkd.in/dE-fDdRv, this work will also be featured in Professor Sam Illingworth’s podcast (https://lnkd.in/e3RKHy8) Research Publication: https://lnkd.in/gbQewfCT UEA Research Cat Bartman

Did you know there are facilities that our students and researchers can access located on west campus? Over at the Norwich Research Park, next to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is the Earlham Institute. 🧬🔬 A short twenty-minute walk from central campus, the Earlham Institute is home to a range of expertise and technologies where all sorts of research takes place, from the Earlham Biofoundry, where large-scale biology and biotechnology projects are undertaken, to the Single-Cell and Technical Genomics labs, which delve into cell analysis and genomic investigations. We spoke to Yash and Dasha, two PhD students who work and research at the Earlham Institute, to give us more of an insight into what you can do in these labs. ⚠️Expert Alert⚠️ Joe Biden has issued ‘a full and unconditional pardon’ of his son this week and Dr Emma Long from our School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies breaks down the history of presidential pardons, what Hunter’s pardon means for American politics, how Trump may use this once in office. Dr Long said in her recent The Conversation UK article: “There was acknowledgement of the pressures of a father helping a child but concern that the pardon would further damage the respect for the justice system and for public office holders. Irrespective of the motive, there is a concern that this will give greater force to claims by Trump and his allies that the Department of Justice has been politicised and weaponised. His legal team has already moved to use it to discuss some legal issues against him.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/eDqj5WnU #AmericanPolitics #AcademicExpert #AcademicLife #PoliticsResearch #HunterBiden

A new era of tackling climate change is on the horizon as the United Nations’ International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to meet this week to discuss countries’ obligations to prevent climate change. 🌍 ⚖️ Professor Corinne Le Quéré from our School of Environmental Sciences and Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research said: “It’s a big step for the UN to ask for this advice. This is a new era in tackling climate change, and current legal requirements to tackle emissions are not strong enough in most countries. There are no obstacles to implementing measures if the court decides that climate change becomes an issue under international law.” To find out more: https://lnkd.in/exw77vHV ClimateUEA #ClimateChangeLaw #AcademicExpert #UnitedNationsCourt #ClimateChangeResearch
