Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is the screen on a Kindle different from a tablet?

Our Kindle devices are designed so you can read comfortably for hours. Kindle has a unique black and white glare-free display that reads like paper even in bright sunlight and enables weeks of battery life. With the display’s distinctive nature, slight shadows of previous text or images can sometimes remain visible on the screen. The display quickly refreshes occasionally to remove these shadows and ensure a high-quality optical experience.

2. Do I need to be a Kindle Unlimited member to read on a Kindle?

No. You do not need a Kindle Unlimited membership to read on a Kindle. All Kindle devices come with instant access to the world’s best eBook store. Kindle Stores worldwide offer millions of titles, including the latest best sellers.

3. How do I setup this Kindle?

You have the option to set up Kindle on the device following its on-screen instructions or with your Kindle app on your phone. When setting up using the phone, just open the Kindle app and enable Simple Setup in settings before you power on your Kindle. If you opted in to link Kindle to your Amazon account for simplified setup at purchase, it will already be registered to you.

NO MORE SWIPE SCREEN TO OPEN!!! YEA👍 My 5th kindle and the best.
This is my 5th Kindle and I love it. I had the original scroll wheel Kindle, then the 1st gen Kindle Touch, the 1st gen Paperwhite, the10th gen Paperwhite, and now the 11th gen basic Kindle with no locked screen ads. I grew to hate the ads with their stupid blurbs. Never had an ad that appealed to me or led to a book purchase. Plus, I always considered swiping to open the Kindle to a stupid waste of time. It is there to keep the ad in your face a little longer. The Kindle Touch had ads on its locked screen, but there was no swipe to open, it went straight to where I had left off just like my new Kindle. Now this new Kindle with no ads opens instantly to the last page read in the book. When it is turned off the screen shows wonderful images: fountain pen caps, dip pen and ink bottle, pencil points, etc. Very artistic. The screen size is identical to my 11th gen Paperwhite., the body a lot thinner, a little narrower and a little taller. And lighter. This basic Kindle has a tiny bezel. I made touching mistakes with the totally flat Paperwhite bezel when a finger would wonder onto the screen. Almost the whole surface of the case has a lovely satin finish. The "Kindle" name on the front is shiny and the Amazon Arrow on the back is recessed and shiny. I made the mistake of ordering the fabric case after I had ordered the Kindle, and it came 5 days later. I did. not take it anywhere until the case came. I consider the case to be necessary to protect the Kindle when carrying around and it reduces the tendency to slide off surfaces. Also keeps the screen cleaner. Love this fabric case.My mistake with my first Kindle Paperwhite was buying a cheap case to save money. It was imitation leather and a good case until the cheap leatherette surface started flaking off. The cover also warped over time, though that was more cosmetic than a problem. By the time I wanted a new case, Amazon had none to fit it anymore. I learned my lesson and bought Amazon's fabric case with my second Paperwhite and with this new Kindle. The first fabric case looks as good after 4 years of heavy use as it did new. While this Kindle is very lightweight, it has no "cheap" feeling at all. Thinner than all the others. Turning on, downloading. books, searching, opening the dictionary are all much faster than the 11th Paperwhite ever was (it seems to have gotten slower and very quirky this past year. A number of times when I opened the dictionary it froze requiring a restart. Other times it froze and had to be restarted). Not being waterproof is not a problem as I don't read in the rain, near pools, nor the surf. The slight step up from the screen to the bezel does not prevent me from using my remote page turner. The new Kindle came with the battery charged to 50% and lasted most of a week before it dropped to 30%. I charged it to 73% some days ago and, after heavy use it is only down to 69%. I keep the backlight at level 1, which is sufficient for reading in the dark. I have never had any need to have the backlight higher than level 4 on my 2 Paperwhite Kindles used heavily over the past 12 years. Unlike my other Kindles I have kept this one connected to WiFi all the time.I recommend this Kindle for anyone who wants a conveniently portable Kindle that fits in coat pockets and takes up little room in a purse or bag. Buying it at the start of Amazon's Black Friday sale saved me the price difference of not irritating lock screen ads. PLUS I DON'T HAVE TO SWIPE TO OPEN ANY MORE!! Thank you Amazon for having this Kindle eBook reader.

The Amazon Kindle is the ultimate e-reader for anyone who loves reading on the go. It's incredibly lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry in my bag or even a large pocket. The glare-free display is perfect for reading outdoors in the sun, and the adjustable front light ensures I can read comfortably in any lighting, day or night.

Page turns are fast and seamless, so there’s no lag while flipping through pages. The 16 GB storage offers plenty of space for thousands of books, which is great if you like to keep a variety of reading material available. Battery life is exceptional too—I've gone weeks without needing to charge it, even with frequent use.

One small downside is that while the Kindle is great for reading e-books, it doesn’t support other types of media, like PDFs or audiobooks, as well as some other devices do. But for pure reading, it’s perfect.

Overall, this Kindle is an excellent choice for those who want a lightweight, portable, and user-friendly e-reader. It’s perfect for anyone who reads a lot and wants a dedicated device for the best reading experience.

It was a big toss-up between the Kindle White and the Kindle Basic (this one). I haven't read books in years and the last kindle was about four years ago. I read from my iPhone or iPad, but never felt it was good for my eyes.

I wanted something easy on the eyes, and something I can pick up in the middle of the night, or wherever and read. Just read. A lightweight, pocketable device that I can pick up, turn on and get right to the page I left off.

When I saw that Amazon had released new devices for 2024 - across the board, I wanted to get one so I can start my habit of reading going again. I have over 500 books in my library and it's time I start moving off of social media scrolling and use most of that time reading.

I saw an interview with Panos Panay, who was brought on to head the Kindle division and really like what he had to say and the journey he took for the year to make improvements. He helped to bring the color kindle to life, though there are some display issues at time of release, I'm sure those will get addressed. I definitely would love to have one of those, but for now, my needs are more of the smaller and lightweight size.

It was a hard choice - between the basic and the paper white. A lot of reviewers say they bought the Paper White and then bought the 2024 basic because the portability was important to them.

After using it for a week, I have to agree. It is smaller, lightweight, and easy to hold in one hand. Once you are in the book, the experience of page flipping is fast and getting to the settings is easy and the speed is adequate.

Working with the library is more difficult. You can manage the device better via Amazon's website. I was able to download the current few books I was reading. I did put the library in list view and that seemed to help.

When I first got the device, it went through the battery pretty quickly. After a couple of days of use it is better, but I had to turn down the display a little bit.

I am going on an international trip, which is one of the reasons for getting the Kindle basic. The battery life is a concern, but I feel like the long multi-stop trip will be enough for one charge with enough to spare. I would rather have this lighter version rather than more battery having something that won't fit in my jeans pocket.

The important thing is that this Kindle Basic is with me a lot of the times and I enjoy picking it up and reading. Yes, I will get the color version at some point - maybe in a couple of years. For now, the Basic surprisingly will be my go-to.

I would recommend they clean up the library view for the Amazon Basic and they upgrade the processor to be even more power efficient while being faster. However, if they made performance improvements I would not upgrade - I would continue to use the Amazon Basic that I have.
