Give us the big picture here.
The first auditorium built based on scientific understanding of acoustics, Symphony Hall combines European-inspired architecture with what continues to be the best acoustics in the country. The majestic interior gives visitors the sense of stepping into a creamy wedding cake trimmed in gold foil and topped with replicas of Greek and Roman statues that nod to Boston’s legacy as a center for the arts.

What kinds of music can we hear here?
As the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, almost all of the performances are of the classical variety, often featuring renowned guests. But the hall opens up the stage to other musical acts for First Night (Boston’s New Year’s Eve program) and other annual events.

Nice. How's the view from the seats?
Even in the back of the auditorium or on the narrow side balconies, you can see the stage unencumbered by the listening heads of those in front of you.

Good for kids?
The Boston Symphony Orchestra offers a wide range of programming for fourth graders and up. Their youth concerts, open rehearsals, discounted students tickets, and pre-and-post concert music demonstrations all make the classical music more accessible—fitting for a city where education is everything. Nothing, though, beats the Holiday Pops concerts.

Anything in particular that makes this place special?
It’s mesmerizing to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra perform here and doesn’t fail to evoke appreciation, regardless of your musical expertise. It’s a treat when Berklee School of Music students from down the street take the stage for a rare performance—their excitement is palpable.

If we’re going to be in town, what—and who—do you think this is best for?
There’s nothing more elegant than a date night at the Symphony after a swanky dinner, but if you prefer a chill experience, come as you are for their casual Friday performances.
