Who we are

Condé Nast Traveler is the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, offering both inspiration and vital intel. We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why our editors mine their network of experts and contributors so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world.

Since it was first published in 1987, Condé Nast Traveler has become a global authority on luxury travel. Today the brand is present across seven global markets (the eighth launches this September) and all major social media platforms, and is overseen by global editorial director Divia Thani. Thani launched the Indian edition of Condé Nast Traveller in 2010 and served as its editor in chief for a decade. She now oversees the brand globally and is based in London.

The Condé Nast Traveler Global Advisory Board

The Condé Nast Traveler Global Advisory Board is an embodiment and reflection of the brand’s global footprint and authority. We formed this committee of experts from diverse sectors of the industry, including tourism, hospitality, aviation, cruise, fashion and luxury, food and drink, wellness, and sustainability—and all corners of the world—to help steer our brand on the issues most pertinent to travel and our audiences.

Condé Nast Traveler’s global advisory board represents the brand’s dynamic and international outlook,” Thani says. “Our board members are pioneers in their fields—from hospitality to aviation, destination marketing to lifestyle—and are some of the most exciting, successful, and innovative leaders in the travel industry in their parts of the world. Pitching and commissioning process

Traveler is mindful about whom we select to write for us, seeking to feature a diverse range of writers who have years of firsthand experience with a particular destination or subject in order to provide insightful, service-driven content. Our editors also work closely with writers, revising and refining drafts before an article is finalized.

Articles may go through several layers of editing prior to publication in order to help ensure the quality of the work. Multiple sources are consulted whenever possible or necessary.

Reviews process

Your time is valuable, and here at Condé Nast Traveler, we want to help you make the most out of each trip you take. As such, Traveler’s destination guides and product reviews are built on first-person experiences. Below, we've outlined how we approach reviewed content so you can better understand what it takes for a hotel, Airbnb, cruise ship, or product to be featured on the website.

How we review hotels

Every hotel we feature online and in print has been selected independently by our editors. Nearly all have been reviewed by a Condé Nast Traveler editor or contributor who knows the destination and has stayed at that property; notable exceptions to this process are Readers' Choice Award–winning hotels, which have been nominated by our community.

When choosing hotels to review and feature, our editors consider properties across price points that offer an authentic and insider experience of a destination, keeping design, location, service, and sustainability credentials top of mind. We update hotel guides regularly as new properties open and existing ones evolve. Some hotel stays are complimentary, but our editors are not obligated to feature the property if it does not meet the Condé Nast Traveler standard.

Truly exceptional hotels that stand the test of time might be featured on our annual Gold List of the best hotels in the world, chosen and curated by our global editors. Our annual Hot List, meanwhile, features standout hotels that have opened in the last year.

For full hotel reviews, we assess the property's rooms, backstory, food and drink offerings, spa (if applicable), neighborhood, service, eco effort, accessibility, and suitability for families.

Traveler editors sometimes gain exclusive access to newly opened properties; tours of the biggest and most exciting hotel and resort openings around the globe are then featured on our video and social platforms as part of the First Guest series. Each video is hosted by an editor and shot by a member of the video team.

How we review restaurants

Food and drink is a big part of the travel experience, which is why we specialize in writing about the best restaurants and bars around the world. The restaurants and bars featured in print and online have been selected independently by our editors and reviewed by a Condé Nast Traveler editor or contributor who knows the destination and has eaten at that restaurant. When choosing restaurants, our editors consider both high-end and affordable eateries, and weigh standout dishes, location, and service—as well as inclusivity and sustainability credentials. We update these lists as new restaurants open and existing ones evolve.

Our list of the Best New Restaurants in New York is the result of our New York City–based editors visiting and reviewing the most exciting new restaurant openings—only the very best make it onto this regularly updated list, which spans cuisines, neighborhoods, and price points.

Our Global Food Map is an interactive guide to restaurants around the world, with suggestions from world-renowned chefs, cookbook authors, and reputable food personalities. Here they share their favorite places to eat, with tips on what to order when you go.

How we review rentals and villas

Due to the nature of these properties, our editors and journalists aren’t always able to personally stay at every holiday rental we feature online. When selecting Airbnbs, we look at listings run by Superhosts or designated as Guest Favorites, and consider amenities, location, decor, ratings, and guest reviews. When selecting rentals and villas from other platforms, we feature properties hosted by reputable companies we trust with strong guest reviews and top-notch amenities. A rental property has been personally visited by a Traveler editor or contributor will be accompanied by a “Stamp of Approval” badge.

How we review cruise ships

Cruise ships are independently reviewed by Condé Nast Traveler editors or contributors who have firsthand experience onboard the cruise. Our ship reviews aim to represent the breadth of the cruise industry, including small, medium, large, mega, expedition, and river ships. These reviews detail the personal experience of the writer in relation to the ship’s food and drink, spa offerings, onboard activities and entertainment, the itinerary, shore excursions, the experience for families, and the ship’s sustainability initiatives. Some trips are complimentary, but our editors are not obligated to feature the cruise if it does not meet the Condé Nast Traveler standard. Our Onboard Obsession franchise highlights specific features of the best-loved cruises, also independently selected and based on firsthand experience from contributors and editors.

How we review travel gear

As frequent travelers ourselves, our editors know the importance of a durable carry-on suitcase or a truly comfortable walking shoe. As a result, we aim to independently test the majority of products we feature online before recommending them to you. To find products worth covering, we often start with brands our editors know, love, and trust, then seek out newcomers and smaller, lesser-known brands in the travel space. In both cases, we prioritize retailers that create high-quality, thoughtfully made gadgets, gear, and travel essentials.

When our editors test a product, we consider features like design, functionality, sustainability, value, aesthetics, comfort, and overall quality. We prioritize rigorous testing for situations where performance and durability matter most, like ensuring the toiletry bottles you’re packing are actually leakproof and the travel pillow you're schlepping around will really help you get some shut-eye. If there’s a stamp of approval on a product we feature, you can rest assured that it’s been thoroughly tested by one of our editors and deemed absolutely worth it.

If we haven’t tested a product, but it has still been featured, you can trust that we’ve referred to customer reviews, spoken to expert contacts, tried other products from the brand before, and pulled on years’ worth of experience as writers at market-leading publications (which requires regular attendance at press days and having a keen eye for trends, style, and quality). Nontested products often sit in the fashion vertical; in these cases, selection is more a matter of style. Our editors aim to feature a variety of brands—ones with global reach as well as small, independent retailers—and particularly those with a size-inclusive range and clearly outlined sustainability standards.

Badges and seals

You may see circular seals appear over products or images on our site, or an award-winner tag on a review page. Here’s what each of those badges means:

  • Stamp of Approval: This is used to indicate that a member of our editorial team or freelance network has thoroughly tested a product, stayed in an Airbnb or rental, or experienced a wellness offering firsthand.
  • Readers’ Choice Awards: This indicates a property has been voted upon by Traveler readers and won a Readers’ Choice Award.
  • Hot List: This indicates a property was designated as one of Condé Nast Traveler’s top new hotels or cruise ships within its first year of operation.
  • Gold List: This indicates a property was selected by a member of Traveler’s international team as one of their all-time favorite places to stay or ships to sail.
  • Best Places to Go: At the end of each calendar year, our editors and contributors put together a list of the best places to go in the following year, taking into consideration a range of criteria—new property openings or cruise itineraries, better airline routes, cultural moments, and more. The stories in this package feature a “BPTG” badge.
  • Bright Ideas: This collection of content honors the ideas that are approaching travel’s most pressing issues with thoughtfulness and zeal—ones that straddle the realms of tech, design, sustainability, community, inclusion, accessibility, and conservation.
