Balboa Island in Newport Beach, Southern California

Let’s start big picture here.
Charm meets kitsch in this small community, home to retirees and families. There are restaurants, shops geared toward tourists, and plenty of outdoor activities, from stand-up paddleboarding to kayaking. Parking is notoriously tough here, so we recommend leaving the car in Newport Beach and catching the ferry to the island. Pro tip: you can also take your car or bike aboard the ferry.

Any standout features or must-sees?
If you're a fan of Arrested Development, you'll want to visit Sugar 'N Spice, the frozen banana stand that's been open since 1945 and inspired the Bluth family business. The joint is known for its chocolate-dipped frozen banana pops topped with sprinkles, nuts, Oreo bits, or Health crumbs. After you've gone, well, bananas, take a stroll and ogle the multi-million dollar homes. We swear, it's even better than looking at the water.

Was it easy to get around?
This is an island community, and getting around feels a bit like navigating a little neighborhood. Streets can be narrow.

All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
If you hate touristy sites, this place isn't for you. Families, on the other hand, will love Balboa Island's food, shops, activities, and walkability.
