Review: The Peninsula Bangkok

Spend leisurely, luxurious days on the Western bank of the river, by one of the city’s most-photographed pools. A dreamy, antique junk boat provides your short crossing to the action of the eastern side.

What strikes you most about this place? It always feels like the holidays at The Peninsula—and that you might be in London, rather than Bangkok, thanks to twinkling lights decorating the grand entrance, dapper doormen, and British racing vehicles parked out front. The hotel's custom tuk-tuk is the reminder that you're still in Thailand. Rich, warm, toffee tones carry throughout the lobby and lounges; the space offers grand views over the Chao Praya and the Thai river homes across the water.

It sounds lovely. How about the digs—any notable features there? It's tempting to sleep with the curtains open just so you can awaken to views of the river. The hotel's location—on the western bank—equals amazing sunrise vistas.

We can't wait to wake up to that. And the F&B—what's on offer? Even if you aren’t staying here, board a junk boat and come for dinner and the ‘Mei Jiang Exclusive’ experience. Executive Chef Stefan Leitner and the hotel's culinary team serve an entirely plant-based, nine-course for up to four guests. You begin with Krug Champagne and canapes served in the bustling kitchen. You also tour the on-site aquarium, where three types of seaweed - green caviar, sea lettuce and Gracilaria—are grown and used in this ground-breaking, modern Chinese menu.

Got it. What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? What about shops or clubs or other places nearby? The Peninsula is located in Thonburi, often referred to as "the Brooklyn of Bangkok." The neighborhood, once known only to locals, has small tailor shops, warehouses, and wholesale businesses. In recent years, Thonburi has boomed; today it's also home to a vibrant retail scene selling everything from flowers to fashion to jewelry, plus a bunch of small restaurants.

Fun! Alright, now tell us what we missed. Did anything in particular stand out to you? The Peninsula swimming pool is among the best in the city; there's no better way to beat the heat in this famously hot capital than by taking a dip right on the river.
