Mattress brands love a sale. So much so that it can sometimes be harder to find a mattress sold at full price than it is to get one at a discount. Fun as that may be, it can also make it hard to know when something is actually good value for money as opposed to “always on sale”. But what if we told you that Origin’s Hybrid Mattress, the mattress we’ve already labelled as “the best value mattress” in our best mattress guide was now an extra 40 per cent off? An indisputable winner of Best Mattress Deal, no doubt.
Let's put this into perspective. Emma’s Luxe Cooling (another of our all-time favourite mattresses) is also 40 per cent off, but even with that discount, you’d be paying £400 more than if you bought the Origin. Both have six layers, both have great support and pressure relief and both have cooling technologies to prevent you from overheating; the Origin Hybrid is simply better value right now. Let's get into more about what makes it so good…
This Black Friday Mattress deal is good enough for an Olympian
Now costing just £379 for a double, the Origin Hybrid is both great value and well-built. It includes 3,000 steel springs to help align the spine, a 3cm ‘Hexagrid’ design that adapts to your body, and a hypoallergenic surface for sensitive skin. It's popular in fitness circles, too, as it’s so supportive to the back. Olympic curler Eve Muirhead is a fan, as is Olympic sprinter Tyler Panton.
I’m no Olympian, but I do attend regular body pump classes and love an at-home HIIT workout. A mattress that helps to ease stiffness after a particularly gruelling session would be welcome, and I was keen to see whether the clever design of the Origin Hybrid made any difference.
To start with, it has all the markings of a premium mattress, with edge support, a well-balanced structure and good motion isolation technology. Delivery was swift and its set-up simple, although it did feel like a workout trying to get it up the stairs. There was little off-gassing when I released it from its vacuum-packing – which is that new factory smell you can sometimes get with a new mattress – but it reached its full size quickly, and was ready to sleep on a few hours after unravelling.
What impressed me on the first night was the supportive structure and pressure relief. It’s a firm mattress (considerably firmer than anything I’ve tried before, such as the Simba Hybrid Original and the Emma Premium NextGen). Still, its HexaGrid design adds a nice cushioning feel, distributing pressure evenly. The middle of the mattress seemed to offer the most support, and I was able to find a comfortable position on my side, front and back.
The ErgoCoil steel springs give the mattress a subtle bounce so it doesn’t feel too solid, either. I soon began to appreciate this when my shoulders and back were feeling achy after circuit training. There’s also a layer of organic bamboo-infused wool and a 100% natural latex layer – all of which keep you at the optimum temperature as you sleep. No sweaty nights here – unless, of course, you have other priorities in mind. At the price, I was expecting a design that felt a little flimsy around the edges and made my body sink in after an hour or so of sleep, but this wasn’t the case here.
It’s ideal for two, but hog the bed if you can
What I noticed most about this mattress is how balanced the structure feels. You get a lot of usable sleeping space without the edges collapsing. I’ve tried budget-friendly mattresses in the past, with edges that seem to completely collapse when you sit on the side of them, but the Origin Hybrid’s edge support is brilliant. I’d go so far as to say it’s one of the best mattresses I’ve tried for edge support, in fact.
To gauge some sort of measurement on pressure relief, I balanced an 8kg weight in the middle of the mattress and measured the sinkage at around 1.5cm, which shows how good the pressure relief is. Even more impressive, I measured the same sinkage at the edges, which is a testament to how balanced the mattress is from edge to edge. Motion isolation technology is good here, too, as I didn’t feel my partner move too much in the night, and vice versa.
Is the Origin Hybrid really worth it?
Olympic athlete or not, it's hard to deny that at just £379 for a double, Origin's Hybrid mattress isn't impeccable value. For six layers, pressure relief, temperature regulation and plenty of support, it's got us questioning if it's really ever worth paying more. But don't wait around, the best Black Friday deals don't last forever, and it's well worth getting this at a discount while you can.
