As if his acclaimed starring turn in Uncut Gems hadn't already dispelled, once and for all, the ridiculous notion that Adam Sandler can't act — see also: The Meyerowitz Stories, Punch-Drunk Love, Netflix's recent basketball drama Hustle — the 56-year-old is set to once again flex his chops in a new collab with Gems directors the Safdies.

No doubt a source of great excitement to cult movie nerds everywhere, Sandler made the announcement in conversation with Vanity Fair's Little Gold Men podcast, ahead of shooting at some point in the “late winter” — early 2023, then.

He described making Uncut Gems as “like the old days, like early Saturday Night Live” – the long-running American sketch show where the comic first made his trade — “handing out with a group, going places together, believing in a project together”. Said belief was certainly reciprocated. On the new project, he said:

“We're supposed to start in the late winter, right. So part of my brain right now is like, ”I'm on tour." Then once the Safdie brothers movie starts — and I love those guys, I know we're going to dedicate ourselves to working our asses off and making sure it's as good as it can be, and I know that takes a lot of time."

Sandler stopped short of revealing any more details about the new movie, with his deets drop marking the first time we've heard anything about a fiction feature Gems follow-up to come from the sibling directorial duo.

Benny Safdie, who has made a point of popping up in bit-part character roles and cameos in indie movies since Gems premiered, will appear as Edward Teller in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, with a role in Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret opposite Rachel McAdams also on the cards next year. He's also co-creating The Curse alongside Nathan Fielder, a “genre-bending scripted comedy” about a couple of voodoo'd newlyweds, which is set to be produced by his brother, Josh.

Now that Sandler has let the proverbial genie out, however, expect some sort of concrete announcement in the coming months. In the meantime, catch Uncut Gems on Netflix.
