We’ve finally made it, Summer is here, and you can finally spend all of your time outside. Except, wait. One problem. There’s some pretty major TV just around the corner. Whether it's Wimbledon, the Euros or the Olympics that’s got you excited, getting your living room (and crucially your sofa) ready for summer is an absolute necessity for 2024.
There are a few pieces of furniture that absolutely set the tone for your home - your dining table, your bed frame, and naturally your sofa. One of the places you’ll find yourself, and anyone you host, spending the most time, getting it right is key to many a comfortable night in unwinding with friends and family. As with a bed or perhaps an office chair, there’s a bit more to consider than the purely aesthetic furniture items. Your sofa needs to be somewhere you can sit for hours at a time without ending up riddled with aches and pains, so besides just colour, fabric and design, we need to be thinking about filling, cushioning and size here.
As long as you have a vague idea what you’re after, getting a sofa right is actually not as challenging as you think. Most of our favourite furniture stores have expansive sofa collections, and there are few sofas that we actively would not recommend (you’ll find none of those below). We’ve included some of the best here, as selected by GQ editors and writers who have visited many a showroom in the hunt for the best sofa. And don’t be put off by whatever colour you see advertised, if you see a design you like, normally there are plenty of customisation options (sometimes hundreds) at your disposal to make sure it looks just how you want it.
To make the process easier, we’ve included a range of some of the best sofas in our round-up below, from modular sofas to classic sofas, with varying price tags for different budgets, and from a selection of retailers from Swoon to Sofa.com.

What is the best sofa to buy?
While we’ve included more detailed reviews further down the page, if you’re after a quick-fire guide to our favourite high-quality sofas, we’ve got you.
Velvet sofas are still one of the biggest interiors trends around and these are two of our favourites. The Dusk Hampshire is available in eight colours including two subtle pastel colours (the green and the blue), and a simple and minimalistic beige and light grey for more simple vibes, while the Soho Home Arundel opts for a bolder rust shade that really stands out in a living room.
Most stylish sofas
When it comes to finding stylish sofas, we're very much on board with opting for a bit of texture and colour to really bring your space to life. The Soho Home Ashford is a great choice for this in a chic velvet rust design, while the Dunelm Rosa comes in a seafoam chenille that can bring a relaxing and calming tone to your space.
We've rounded up all of the options for comfortable sofas for sleeping in our sofa beds guide, but if you're after a quick look, these two are well worth your time. The Barker & Stonehouse Harrington is a classic navy look that's easy to use and comfy, while the Dusk makes for a super practical sofa that just unfolds nice and simply, whilst coming in a few colour options.
Best two-seater sofas
As far as two-seater sofas, we're really enjoying the classic sofa, minimalist vibes of these two from The White Company and John Lewis, being easy to place in almost any room. If you don't fancy leaving yourself susceptible to stains and marks from The White Company option however, you can choose between 75 other fabrics and colours in the John Lewis one, as well as two different leg finishes, to find the one that's right for your room. A great space-saving decision.

How do we choose the best sofas? Our testing process.
Trying to choose the best sofas was no small feat, especially given how many furniture brands there are on the market at the moment. While it isn't quite possible to arrange a delivery of every single sofa to our small London flat, we did spend plenty of time hopping between furniture stores and warehouses to try and give them the best assessment we could.
In most cases here, we've tried and tested a good portion of sofas in this guide, or have good confidence in the brands we're recommending due to previous experience with the furniture they produce. And when we haven't quite managed to get around to tracking the sofa down in person yet, we took a deep look through the online specs, including the fabric, amount of cushioning, sizes and dimensions, colour, style, materials and design, as well as other features like customisation options, to get a good idea of what's worth your time, and what isn't.
What should I look for when buying a sofa?
To find out the most pressing features we should be looking for when buying a new sofa, we asked Joanne Quinn, senior interior designer at LuxDeco, to share her expert tips:
Always make sure you’re buying the right-sized sofa for the space. If you’re moving home and your current sofa doesn’t work, sell it and buy new. Scale is the most important factor, so think about two-seater sofas versus three-seater sofas and consider the depth in relation to the size of the room.
When deciding which upholstery to opt for, always consider the function of the overall room and how you’re going to live in the space. Sofas in high-traffic areas – with kids and pets, for example – need to be upholstered in a durable fabric, so check whether they are easy-care and spill-resistant before you buy.
