After the comedown from all the endorphin-inducing horological action at Geneva’s Palexpo exhibition halls for Watches & Wonders, we are back to spotting watches on celebrities’ wrists. From the sublimely elegant to the outright ridiculous with several in between, here’s who’s wearing what watches this week.
Nicolas Cage - Grand Seiko SLGA008 in rose gold five-day Spring Drive calibre
Find the insta-Reel of Nicolas Cage describing his choice of a Grand Seiko SLGA008 to match his suit, and you only find him even more charmingly quirky than before. At the premiere of the most Nicolas Cage film ever, The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent, where Cage plays a toned-down version of himself, true to the enigma that surrounds him, he matched the tree bark pattern (sic) pattern of his suit jacket to the sumptuous wood grain of a rose gold Grand Seiko dial. Nick’s The Man.
Scott Scheffler - Rolex GMT Master Root Beer
Playing four sublime rounds of golf like he did, to score the biggest Masters Tournament payout in history with a figure more than $2 million, his wristwear really should reflect such an achievement. But the off-centre choice of a deliciously warm brown Rolex Root Beer GMT-Master was resolutely cool. A perfect match to the cocoa lining of that sumptuous green jacket, and an astute choice – one that no doubt wouldn’t have pre-empted but certainly would have dreamed of.
DJ Khaled - Patek Philippe Nautilus Chronograph
Celebrating his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, DJ Khaled matched his larger-than-life personality with a scintillating orange suit and wrong-but-right salmon tinged kicks. An understated watch would just be wrong, and his Patek Philippe Nautilus ref.5980? Well, it seemed demure in his company, despite its gold case factory being set with 893 round and 182 baguette-cut diamonds.
Jay Z - Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar All Black Ceramic
Smashing it with a studied choice, Jay Z chooses a wrist-grail from the Dark Side, juxtaposing DJ Khaled’s refined Patek bling. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar All Black Ceramic is as complex as it name implies, but with a sombre, rakish twist to its splendour.
Reece James (Chelsea footballer) post training wearing a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Pink Candy Dial
Last but not least, there is nothing like pink on a confident man, and the swagger of England and Chelsea’s Reece James makes the candy-pop pink of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual a natural fit. Quite the baller, James merely underlines the street-cool of what only a few years ago would be marketed as a 36mm ladies’ watch, making Tiffany Blue yesterday’s news.
Some notable mentions
Elsewhere, boxing royalty Canelo Alvarez sported a not so subtle Jacob and Co piece – the not so catchy ‘Oil Pump Double Axis Tourbillon’. Let’s not even start the debate on whether this is a watch or not, this massive £285K piece of wrist-art is beyond the term. Hard-hitting Canelo rocks this massive timepiece like it was a Swatch, the 18K rose gold case framing a dial with a miniature, functional oil pump. Brash like its owner, and for some reason rather intriguing in its theatrical excess.
On to other royalty, the Brooklyn Beckham wedding was a veritable smorgasbord of wrist-delights, and not necessarily for the bling. Posh Spice’s papa, Anthony Adams, erred on the suave side of caution, ignoring the century-old rule of leaving your watch at home when wearing a tuxedo. What better choice than the French touch of an iconic and sleek Cartier Tank. And in the unlikely case of a billionaire celebrity father-in law throwing caution to the wind, Nelson Peltz has our deepest respect. If you love your sports watch, to hell with it, keep it on with the tux as a perfect counterpoint. Yes, that is really a Patek Philippe Aquanaut on a rubber strap, and Peltz Snr flaunts it as the rake he is.
