About
Designed by Hall of fame golf course architect Press Maxwell, the course and original clubhouse opened 9 holes in 1964 and fully opened for play in the summer of 1965 as Foothills Golf Club. The then owners, the Loukonen family, envisioned a private club with about 35 large lots surrounding the course on what was formerly a horse property and stables. All roads leading to the property were unpaved and it was a long way from what anyone considered Boulder at the time.
The private club concept was abandoned shortly after construction was complete and the renamed Lake Valley Golf Course was opened to the public as a “daily fee” course. None of the original lots were developed and the course and surrounding property were sold in 1973 to Fred Sproul, a New Mexico developer who also had big plans for it. Unfortunately Mr. Sproul ran into difficulties with his New Mexico projects and lost Lake Valley to foreclosure in 1977 when it was purchased by then Head Golf Pro Scott (Scotty) Edwards.
By the time Scotty purchased it, the course had became home to many local golfers as well as leagues from Beech Aircraft and IBM. Scotty was a colorful character as were many of the regulars playing Lake Valley at the time. So much so that Rick Reilly, a Boulder native and distinguished sports reporter and author used the regulars as his inspiration for the “Goons” in his first golf book “Missing Links”. To this day, a couple of these characters still enjoy knocking it around at what was then commonly called “Snake Valley” or the “Snake”.
In 1979, Scotty sold the course and surrounding land to another development group
It was controlled by Ralph Patterson a successful Canadian businessman and Jeff Parsley a local attorney/developer. In 1987, Ralph and his company then sold the subdivision and leased the course (with an option to buy) to Venture Group, a development company owned by Ken Shapiro and Mitch Galnick.
Venture Group immediately began making improvements to the course and facilities including adding a new, much needed, irrigation system. Under Venture Group’s ownership the Lake Valley Estates Subdivision was completed and sold out by 1990. Shortly thereafter, they planned and then developed the highly successful North Rim subdivision completing that project in 1995.
With all the development land sold and the course lease and option still in effect Venture Group then turned its attentions solely to the course and the possibility of forming a private Club. In 1996, after numerous consumer surveys, focus groups and the help of various consultants, the owners embarked on the journey of upgrading the course and seeking members to join the soon to be Lake Valley Golf Club.
LVGC, LLC, the Club’s current owner was formed in 1996 and membership sales then began.
The Club immediately became semi-private and in June 1998 opened a new, award-winning Clubhouse next door to the old clubhouse. The old clubhouse was then deconstructed and a new cart building was built to take its place. The Club’s course and practice areas became fully private on July 1, 2000 while the Golf Shop and the Persimmon Grill remain open to the public.
As more members were added in the early 2000’s, the Club built a new Maintenance Building, and a water-feature surrounding the practice putting green. We also made numerous improvements to the course including adding new bunkers, rebuilding old ones and returning parts of the course to a more natural and environmentally sensitive state which has encouraged the abundant wildlife we regularly enjoy seeing during our golf experiences today. During this time (2003) LVGC, LLC also executed its option and purchased the course.
The Club continues to make improvements to the course and facilities, which along with access to an on-site lake for swimming, fishing and non-motorized boat use, are greatly enjoyed by the 400+ golf members and their guests. Patrons of the Persimmon Grill and the Golf Shop, both of which are open to the public, are able to share in their pleasure as well.
While the Club is just in it's twenties the course enjoys a long and storied history, hosting numerous annual (Hale Irwin Memorial) and periodic (1969 Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship, 2016 US Senior Open Qualifying, 2018 US Amateur Four Ball Qualifying, 2021 U.S. Girl's Junior Qualifying, U.S. Senior Women's Open Qualifying) Championships as well as being home to generations of Boulder area golfers.
We are excited about our future and hope that you and your family can join us in making more memories.
