Overheard at an Insurtech Conference "I am so happy to be traveling again, I was lonely for a couple of years." We are social creatures and long for the human interaction that so many conferences, meetings and traveling provides. Simply put, we need affirmation and confirmation of our value and existence within the industry that travel provides. It's called Networking, but it is so much more and we benefit both intellectually and emotionally by "being out there" with our colleagues, exchanging news, gossip and jokes. Sharing a meal or co-working on a presentation activates our feeling of self-worth. Get out there, educate yourself and share the happiness that life provides, you will be better for it and so will the others you meet.

I have found that being a subject matter expert in insurance is both the hardest and easiest thing to do. It is hard because insurance requires technical knowledge. It is easy because you can pick any insurance product and become the subject expert, such as liability expert, engineering expert, property expert, etc. Out of the above points what has been helpful for me has been gaining knowledge and getting the necessary hands on experience. Teaching others is also a great way to reinforce what you know and learn from others as well. Reaching out to people regarded as experts in the industry as a form of networking. One should ensure there is continued learning.
