Here's how you can deliver impactful presentations as a community organizer.

A significant impression in communications involves more than the simple ability to master technical jargon and data; it requires adaptation and flexibility in your communication style to make your audience "touch" your message. Mastering technical terminology is challenging. Being capable of remembering data and facts requires memory and has merit... in another place. To pass an impactful and powerful message requires us to adjust language style based on whom we are addressing. Doing it shows respect and ensures your message resonates. Paying special attention to your tone gives your message the right feeling to be remembered. A message not heard won't be impactful.

Impactful community organizing begins with deeply understanding your audience. What are their cultural backgrounds? How about their communication preferences? Avoid assumptions and include culturally-relevant language and examples. Infuse empathy into your presentation by providing opportunities to listen to your audience's concerns and share personal stories that resonate with their experiences. Engage them via storytelling buy giving your presentation a clear narrative structure, paired with culturally-responsive visual aids. As you present, be intentional with your non-verbal communication: eye contact, appropriate gestures, facial expressions. Leave room for flexibility with your presentation based on audience reactions and feedback.

Building a powerful speech to convey your message is not just about having a strong vocabulary. It also involves listening to your audience and adjusting your communication style effortlessly in every situation. It's important to know when to prioritize clarity and relevance over formality and data. Our words should be used to convey what raw data cannot. When giving a speech, we "need" to appeal to emotions and connect with people's values, beliefs, and feelings. This emotional connection should be powerful enough to inspire action. Effective communication also requires using the right tone to convey the message's emotion. The delivery of the message is just as important as the content, oratory is as essential as the message itself.

I believe that the most powerful speeches rely more on the content of the message and the tone in which they are delivered than on any visual aids. Meaningful speeches can resonate with everyone's lives, evoking emotions and touching something inside of everyone. When addressing communities, especially minorities, the greatest ability lies in touching the emotion that unifies these communities. When I think of powerful messages, I think of Martin Luther King Jr. saying "I have a dream" and how it resonated with everyone who heard him, reminding them that they too dream. The speaker should not lose the spotlight during a speech, I believe that a message evokes emotion not giving it aids makes it flexible to be felt on a personal level.

Practicing your delivery is very important to facilitating a presentation that bring awareness, confirmation, emotion, or clarity. You want to think through how you want your audience to feel, what you want to go through their minds and hearts, and what ideas should be generated from the presentation. Communicating verbally and nonverbal helps bring about all of those things using tone, touch and tempo.

Improving our communication skills is a constant need. Communication goes way beyond words. It also involves voice, tone, rhythm, and body language. The way we deliver a message is essential to achieve its objective. I firmly believe that to connect with our public comes with the necessity to know your message by heart. I would go further yet and say that to deliver a meaningful message, we should feel it. Belief is required to touch people's hearts when we address communities. We must share something in common with our listener, "speak the same language". Having confidence and belief in your cause is essential to take away insecurity. Confidence unifies technique with emotion. Practice will only sharpen what you already have.

Engaging the audience is key. I argue that the best presentations happen when we speak with the audience and not at the audience. Further, the conduit for knowledge transfer is most efficacious when the education experience is interactive. In my domain I employ a model of citizen science as we share on the importance of biodiversity loss and the need for conservation. Employing art as a means to convey important principles and concepts has been very successful for engagement.

In my experience, some of the keys to deeply engaging the audience include: * consistent storytelling with myriad examples that illustrate the power of the content you're sharing * dynamic and novel information * regular opportunities for participants to make meaning of the content through conversations with partners and in small groups * posing questions intermittently so that participants are not solely hearing declarative sentences * regular team-building opportunities that center around movement and laughter * using creative structures to hear from many voices in the room rather than the same few (see the back of my book, On The Same Team, for a host of these structures and team builders)

I always try to engage my audience. First by crafting my message in terms they can understand, especially using imaginary. Images attached to ideas stay with people longer and makes a deeper impression than mere words alone. I don't like to stand behind a podium. It feels like I'm hiding from the people. I like to stand out front so people can see me. I also walk about on the stage so everyone feels connected."Work the room" as the expression goes. When possible, I wade into the audience; stand among them. I ask questions. Some are rhetorical. Some aren't. I use a lot of content related storytelling and humor. So there you have it---imaginary, storytelling, direct contact, and humor.

Engaging the audience is one of the main reasons I strongly believe in the importance of connecting with them. Providing explanations, for example, during public speaking can be challenging, as it often leads to a loss of engagement. To avoid this, one suggestion is to make the explanation part interesting and establish common ground between what appeals to the audience and what needs to be explained. I believe that demonstrating a genuine passion for your cause or topic is key. Most people are captivated by speakers who openly show their enthusiasm for what they're discussing. A truly passionate speaker is magnetic, they view interruptions not as a problem, but as an opportunity to delve even deeper into their explanation.

Listening to Community Feedback is key in keeping your audience attention and gaining their trust. In community organizing it is very common to have disagreements on perspectives, so listening to how others come to a conclusion is paramount. It also helps in bringing everyone together on common goals.
