Build Safety : Building a culture of safety is about building trust and culture of belongingness. To be able to embrace openness, people should feel safe at the workplace. 2. Share Vulnerability : It’s about humanizing the environment by sending a clear signal that everyone has weaknesses and everyone has the power to manage the weaknesses and convert them into strengths. Sharing vulnerabilities promotes a culture of authenticity and honesty. 3. Establish Purpose: Purpose ties people together and empower them to move ahead in alignment with the organization.

Communicate expectations as well as expected results. Stay open and transparent so that your team feels as if they can do the same. If you withhold details or information you will lose trust and that can have detrimental impact on the project.

You are never losing if you learn. Failing fast should be encouraged. I was in HK at a prepress house, discussing with the production manager what went wrong with our first proof. So many of the images had been rejected by the client. I had seen the transparencies and I was perplexed because the proofs looked really close to them. So we took the few accepted ones and analyzed them. We saw what the differences were and discussed how we could achieve this for all the other images. The second proof was almost completely accepted! I discussed this with the client later. He said he was trying to achieve the look of these underwater cave images as he had remembered them in his mind. That was a completely different thing and could have been accomplished by having a test done with a few key images initially.

One of the prepress technicians in the HK prepress house was a beginner. His work on this project was completely rejected except for one proof image. The project manager told me instead of pointing out all the ones that had not been done correctly he focused completely and respectfully as a teacher, on the one image he had done well. That was a lesson I will never forget. The technician was aware of all the images he had not done properly and grateful for the respect shown by the manager. Mistakes are always going to happen, but how you handle them differentiates yourself between being just a manager to becoming an outstanding leader.
