In my experience when you realize that working a regular 9 to 5 is not designed to bring you above the poverty level. Then and only then will you prepare to be Self-Employed.

There are many (many) parameters for self-exploration that may help to define if self-employment fits for you. For me, the top two criteria are your risk tolerance, which means how comfortable you are with risk and uncertainty. The second criteria is your self-discipline because without a structured work environment, self-employed individuals need strong self-discipline to manage their time effectively, meet deadlines, and stay productive.

Know thyself. Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. You must be organized, driven, and realistic. It will take time for your business to develop and patience will be required. There is noone to hold you accountable or give a "swift kick" other than you. If you know that focus is not your strong suit, you may want to consider starting your business on a part-time basis versus jumping in full time. That way you have a "safety net" in the event the business grows more slowly than anticipated. The safety net also allows you to get the training you need before you jump in full time.

I believe self-employment also requires a lot of personality and preferences, such as motivation, discipline, resilience, flexibility, and independence. You need to be able to work without supervision, set your own goals and deadlines, cope with uncertainty and stress, adapt to changing situations, and make your own decisions😊 Do you have the personality and preferences to do all these things? If not, are you ready to change them or compensate for them?✨ unless you answer these questions for yourself there is no point diving into self-employment.

There are a number of questions you need to ask yourself. Are you resilient and resourceful? Think about past challenging situations and how you dealt with these Are you curious and willingness to learn? Are you comfortable with selling your services and your expertise? Are you willing to try new things, every day?

In my experience, I believe the most important thing to determine is whether you are in intrinsically motivated or dependent on external motivation. Intrinsic motivation will propel you through all the challenges and changes which come with being self-employed. A quick exercise to determine whether you are intrinsically motivated is to think of whether you are able to do things that you need to do when you do not necessarily feel like what you want to do those things.

Entrepreneurs are the starving artists of business culture. Consider that for a moment. In college, I took a lecture series from many well-known entrepreneurs. The class was like pure adrenaline to me. But I noticed that every single one of the entrepreneurs noted that the lifestyle of an entrepreneur only looks bright and glittery because you only hear from the successful ones. That "survivorship bias" should give people pause. And while I absolutely and completely believe you never know your potential until you stick your name out there and take on legal & business risks in your own name, the chance at that elusive up-side payout often comes after many, many long, dark and sometimes lonely downsides. Is it worth the risks? YES.

One of the mistakes I committed in my earlier career was when I wanted to retire at the age of 30 and then soon I realised how wrong I was and how unprepared I was at that time. I am not suggesting that it is not a realistic thought to retire at 30 but all I am conveying was how unprepared I was. we need to understand our strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats well before we think of getting into the entrepreneurial space. Don't assume that just because family and friends find you "awesome" and "fantastic," you are automatically right for it. I think it's always great to start off as a Side Hustle, so you're not without a safety net. With about 10years work experience as an employee, you'll have a rough idea of what not to do. However, you'll most likely spend another 10 yrs making it work.
