How can you gain more leadership experience to prepare for a promotion?

A great leader once told me. "Give people the ability to grow and they will naturally navigate to where they want to be. You just open the path and lay down the groundwork for them. They will do the rest and if they don't, you need to create realistic and achievable objectives" This advice has been helping me in life and with my teams & and my clients. Be ethical, compassionate, and creative. The rest will fall in place... Lead from all angles and stay out of the way!

Ask and offer to help - often! I think self-advocacy is the most powerful tool you have to accelerate personal career growth. As new projects are mentioned, ask if there is an opportunity for you to take the lead, or even lead some of the components. Leadership takes on many different forms, not just people management. Is there a presentation coming up that you can take the lead on preparing materials? Can you run point and manage logistics for an important meeting? All of those things can showcase different forms of leadership. If the promotion you are seeking IS a people management role but you are an individual contributor, talk to your manager about taking on an intern! Always advocate for yourself and your career growth.

Taking initiative is a paramount strategy for acquiring leadership experience and positioning oneself for a promotion. Actively seek opportunities to lead projects or initiatives within your current role, demonstrating a proactive approach to challenges. Having a network and personal board of advisors is key to getting to the next level in your career. No amount of results will replace having a sponsor that will advocate for you and put your name in for a role. Additionally, find a mentor that can help you navigate your organization and refine your personal brand.

Contributing actively in or leading cross-functional teams is an especially good one to consider because it also increases your visibility. Know how other departments work and how their work connects to your own. Be conversant with their goals and deliverables as much as you are those of your own department. Demonstrating this awareness will set you apart.

While reading books and articles are a great way to increase your leadership knowledge BUT experience comes with doing. My biggest piece of advice is to take what you have read and put it into action. Don't just read and forget it. Read and do it! Try it! Practice it! That is leadership experience: learning and action. So every time you read a leadership book or article write down your one actionable insight that you are going to do to gain experience versus just knowledge.

If your organisation offers secondment or shadowing opportunities, great. If not seek out really inspirational leaders within (and beyond) your organisation and observe them. Also, take advantage of opportunities to lead internally (e.g. in Employee Resource Groups) or externally (e.g. in community based initiatives). More importantly, enjoy the learning journey.

Volunteer! Some of my most impactful leadership growth experiences first started through volunteering. This a great opportunity to learn leadership skills because: 1. you're already in an environment that relates to your interest/passion, 2. you learn to lead your "employees" through intrinsic motivation (since they're not getting paid), 3. you expand your network of co-professionals in other sectors, broadening your perspective when working with your own company.
