Mentoring provides the opportunity to give back some of what I have been able to benefit from over my career. I've had great opportunities to learn and experience many things in many industries and so many lessons learned. Being a mentor lets me tap into those knowledge and experience banks for the benefit of someone who has yet to walk that path. Giving guidance, support, direction and affirming correction are things that will clear the path for someone else to achieve success without some of the obstacles or pain that I endured.

I always notice when a team member makes a project their own. Or, takes ownership and ensure it’s delivered on time and accurately. I also notice when they impact the team as a whole with their positive contributions. Lastly, seeing a need and completing it without being asked can reflect their ability to look at the big picture and see what is needed.

Not only is effective communication, important, but it is also imperative that it’s timely. If a team member knows they are unable to fulfill a commitment, or they don’t have enough information to complete a task, the responsibility is theirs to communicate the need for either an extension or further assistance. Follow up when necessary and don’t wait for your supervisor to ask for something that should be complete.

The pathway to success and strength in any relationship, business or personal, is communication. One of the most important things that I learned along my path was the value of communicating in the way and style that the person that I was talking to needed to receive it. Rather than always choosing my default communication style, the better I became at calibrating my style, the more my messages were received, the fewer times I had to repeat myself and the quicker results were achieved. This is still one of the biggest areas that leaders struggle with and it can be a muscle that you train and practice on improving. 1. Listen to understand, not respond. 2. Wait for the punctuation before interjecting. 3. Confirm understanding and clarity.

In this area what helps set the efforts apart and make a meaningful progress to career growth is linking the innovation/initiation to an opportunity/challenge that is core to the current business strategy. Ask yourself and other leaders - what are the most pressing challenges/opportunities we have and think about how you can make a dent against these (even if just in the form of proposal as a first step).

Innovating for the sake of it in order to "stand out" can be counter productive. If you want to stand out in order to help your leadership aspirations in your organization you may be better served by taking on smaller initiatives that build momentum and recognition. Initiatives around team building and social interactions are popular in the workplace and touch a wider number of staff.

I've always shared and encouraged my participants and mentees if they wanted a promotion, they need to start performing the role even if they're not yet promoted. If you are a junior wanting to be a senior, then act like a senior. Demonstrate the skills required, skill up, perform above and beyond. A true leader does not need a title to lead, what you'll need is the initiative and respect of others.

In my experience, trying to complete all the work yourself not only can cause exhaustion, but it prohibits your team members from showcasing their ability to move to the next level. Delegating a task then inspecting what you expect along the way, is an opportunity for your team member to earn your trust. They have an opportunity to prove what they’re capable of. And, as a leader, you might get to take a day off!

When you are leading teams, one of the most valuable tools on your utility belt is the ability to delegate. Sadly, it often is either misused or remains holstered. What you delegate should meet two tests: 1. Is this something that is distracting/impeding me from my main thing? 2. Can someone on my team learn/grow/develop through completing this task? Meeting those two tests is a good way to determine if it should be given to someone else or done yourself. When you delegate, leaders should be distributing those opportunities across their team, not just to their go-to people. By limiting who gets opportunities, that reduces the strength of the overall team because you aren't building skills in everyone, only a select few.

A hard lesson I had to learn while being in the military (in which I’d take into the civilian sector) is that every task you are given doesn’t mean you solely have to do it yourself, but you are the person that’s responsible for ensuring the task is completed. Therefore, being able to properly delegate not allows you to demonstrate leadership but also prevents you from being burned out on the job.

The critical question is, “What is the difference between a junior capable person and a senior capable person?”. A junior capable person is impactful when they are present in the room. At the same time, a senior competent person is still impactful when not in the room. They establish systems of systems processes and mentor others to be successful. If you are the person who is always doing the firefighting and superhero work, it is commendable, but this is not scalable. Demonstrate your ability to scale the best practices through a system of systems, a team of teams, processes, and mentoring others.

Putting yourself out there. To show leadership skills you want to demonstrate that you can stretch and push yourself. So put your hand up for the work that takes you out of your comfort zone. Offer to do the extra that isn't in your current job description. Showing you are more than what you are doing now can go a long way in getting that promotion. Obviously, it is a double-edged sword, as adding too much pressure can impact you, your wellbeing and performance, so choose carefully the things that really interest you.

While all of these suggestions are good, they follow the dominant perspective in leadership circles that promotions come from demonstrating your value. This isn't entirely incorrect. Leadership is influence, so if you want a promotion grow your influence. Influence grows by: 1) understanding culture 2) adding value 3) solving problems 4) discerning time 5) following well Do these things over time and you'll find that your leaders will have a greater appreciation for what you bring to the table, your influence will grow, and those are the kind of people that get promoted. If you are overly focused on climbing the ladder, you'll miss the opportunity to grow your influence, the key to moving up!
