How can you identify the most promising environmental planning career paths for Sustainable Design?

In identifying the most promising environmental strategies, it's crucial to focus on scalability and impact. For example, a small community initiated a local recycling program, which not only reduced waste but also educated residents on sustainability. This program eventually inspired neighboring towns to adopt similar initiatives, amplifying its positive environmental impact. Remember, even the smallest actions can spark significant change when aligned with passion and community engagement. Together, we can create a greener future.

Here Australia, the primary purpose of all our States (Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland etc) planning legislation is, "ecological sustainable development" and it has been like this since about 1992 I believe. I would love to know whether other countries also make “sustainability” the primary objective of their Planning Legislation. For all who want to work in the sustainability area, a deep understanding of the Planning System is crucial. It is through this system that entire Built Environment is born. All infrastructure, all buildings, and all zoning (i.e. green belts, agricultural areas, industrial areas etc), is a product of the Planning System. To be champion for environmental is, by definition, to be aware of the Planning System.

Maybe my own experience might be useful. I have always found that people with practical experience can influence the most. I, completely unintentionally, stated the first ten years of my working life with about 5 years of overseas volunteering work. Then in the periods where I was doing paid work, I always volunteered for any assignments that required traveling or being onsite. It was kind of an itch to be outdoors and to be where the action was – sitting at a desk working on a computer never appealed to me. Then, again, without planning it, I also applied for work in several different countries. Without knowing how, I somehow became able to give endless examples of how projects could be made to be sustainable.

Is it important to consider that certain careers or specializations may provide more direct opportunities to influence sustainability on a larger scale? Yes of course, but in the same time it actually doesn’t matter what is your job or specialty; the only thing that matters is your approach to the sustainability. So if you’re a fashion designer, a baker or a homemaker you can still make a huge difference in the world by every single action and decision.

Unfortunately it is hard to be promoted in an organization. It is also not uncommon to find that a peer of inferior ability and commitment is promoted, or someone from outside the organization is brought in to fill the role that you have been aiming for. But if you are promoted that is fantastic and well done! Therefore, my advice is to always be diligent and dedicated. Always try to get written letters from superiors and clients to confirm the work you have done, including criticisms. Always try to finish a project. Ask for promotions at your annual reviews and ask what you need to do to get promoted. If promises are not kept, then look for new opportunities.

Some of the greatest advice I ever received was, firstly, it takes about 2 years to become competent at a role, if after two years you want to stretch out and try something new, then do so. Secondly, at the end of every single day, sit and close your eyes and play back the day like watching a video, then write notes or reflections in your diary. Finally, everyone is unique, follow your passions and build a unique “stack” or collection of skills and experience, and always make “helping others and the whole world” as your ultimate goal.
