How can you optimize tunnels for urban areas?

LA Metro Red Line construction proved there are some conditions that can't be avoided: site seismicity, soil conditions or buried elements. While each can impact cost or schedule, one can perform extensive investigation of historical land use and laws in force at the time to determine potential of buried items on site that may impact construction. Avoiding parcels used for military or landfill operations may reduce those resources needed to perform various studies required by the environmental clearance/permit process. Understanding various construction techniques that may employ reuse of excavated materials (DMM, slurry walls, gabions, etc.) may decrease costs significantly and qualify the project for certain funding unavailable otherwise.

Use of circular TBMs proves cross-sections using regular polygons are easier to construct and interaction forces between structure and surrounding/supporting soils are usually easier to model and quantify. A heptagonal cross-section proposed for the now shelved Route 710 Extension tunnel would have allowed for two-way rail traffic and utilities at the lowest level, six lanes of HOV and truck traffic on a middle level and six lanes of mixed-flow traffic on an upper level where vertical clearance could be limited to 13 ft. Techniques employed in modern mine construction could be used to perform underground excavation and construction safely with minimal impact to surface conditions above the site. Segmental or staged construction also helps.

Structure type and framing configuration selection can facilitate segmental construction underground. While an upper section is bored and remains shielded, a portion of tunnel below it may be excavated and shored using the excavated material as part of the permanent structure (such as done using DMM techniques). Thus, a reinforced concrete lower portion of a multi-level tunnel cross-section frame could be constructed to support an upper steel frame portion while TBM proceeds providing 'pilot holes' for these other sections to be built safely. Steel frame spacing could be optimized to fill voids between frames with plates or concrete/shotcrete as allowed by applicable building codes. Controlled excavation and framing is possible in this way.

A lost art is the inclusion of light wells in the design of structures that block sunlight from reaching the interior where traffic flows. Caltrans used to have light wells in freeway undercrossings (where streets cross beneath the freeway). With median widenings closing this area, light wells have gone the way of the dinosaur. In tunnels, a light well may serve both to bring in illumination as well as ventilation. Creative ways to reflect and or redirect sunlight (through prisms or other diffusing media) may be employed to allow for reduced lighting expense during daylight hours. While it may be theoretically possible to transform light by lasers and reflect that light repeatedly as a method of "trapping" it, such a process is infeasible.

Like modern-day elevator control, where you select a desired floor and the control system tells you which elevator will take you to the floor you selected, I envision future tunnel monitoring and control systems to be somewhat if not entirely automated. With current technology, it's possible to monitor traffic conditions, get live updates from sensors already in place and determine the number of lanes required to reduce traffic congestion during times of peak traffic flow. Those same systems can be extended to adjust fan speed for ventilation, luminance for safety and pumps for drainage during storm events. With the evolution of AI, there are many ways to optimize such control systems; however, like in military operations, you need backups.

In order to improve safety and efficiency, innovative tunnel design in metropolitan environments optimises a number of factors, including lighting, ventilation, and traffic flow. Using cutting-edge building materials can save expenses and have a positive environmental impact. Preventive maintenance is made possible and overall performance is enhanced by the integration of smart technology such as sensors and real-time monitoring systems. In addition, the integration of sustainable elements like rainwater harvesting and renewable energy generation improves the tunnel's environmental impact and strengthens the urban infrastructure.
