Intently study and familiarize yourself with ISO 13.300. Then identify the type of hazardous material: nuclear/fissile, explosives, toxics, bio-waste, caustic chemicals, volatility, gas, liquid, solid, plasma? Which temperature/pressure is required for stability? Is it "surface transport" only (i.e. no aircraft)? Then commit to sending it to Harris County/Houston, Texas- they take everything.. for a price:)

There are also amount and combinations of HAZMATs that are strictly regulated due to the amount of impact they pose to public health and environment in the event of an accident. If it is your first time, consult among your coworkers or peers if they have had previous experience with the material you are transporting and if they have lessons learned on typical routes or pitfals to avoid. Look for compliance checklists as a way to make sure you follow all requirements. If no checklists exists at your policy level, then perhaps it would be a good opportunity to develop and share them.
