How do you prioritize the features and functionalities of your product based on customer needs?

Developing new and innovative products / product features, relies on scalability. My go to process: - Map out what success looks like, both as a fully completed products (if that ever exists) and as an MVP. - Map out all available resources. - Engage, speak, illicit ideas, thoughts and discussion. Users are everything. Never lose sight of this. - Agile...all the way! Whether you have £100 or £10m, stay lean, agile and learning. - Continual innovation means a better product and engaged users. - Don't ever become precious. Take negative feedback well, be open. - Can you share or collaborate to reduce use of resources?

This statement explains how your product solves a specific customer problem and stands out from competitors. Use tools like the Value Proposition Canvas or Lean Canvas to map out customer segments, identify pain points, and ensure your product addresses these key areas. This approach helps you focus on building features that directly add value, rather than overloading the product with unnecessary functionalities.

Start with the core! Before prioritizing features, solidify your product's value proposition. What unique benefit does it offer customers? Understanding this core value guides feature development to ensure they directly address customer needs and not stray from your product's central purpose.

Start by deeply understanding your target customers and their needs, pain points, and desires. This can be accomplished through customer interviews, surveys, user testing, and market research. Understanding your customers will help you identify the features and functionalities that are most important to them.

One of the best ways to define, aka write down, the value proposition for a new product or feature is to understand the pain and job to be done for the customer. There are things you can't efficiently define unless you deeply understand the problem you are solving.

This high-level description is true but you can really only validate so much. You will never know how much your customers want some feature, how much or how often they're willing to use it in concert with your other features, how much they will churn and if they will be really willing to pay for it - until you release the feature. From my experience, the most efficient way to test and move forward is through MVPs. If you get good in defining really minimal (yet still useful) product or feature, this can become your secret weapon.

Don't guess, validate! User research is your secret weapon. Conduct surveys, interviews, or usability tests to directly gather customer feedback. These methods uncover real user needs and pain points, validating your assumptions about what features would be most valuable. Prioritize features that directly address the issues your target audience struggles with most.

Gather feature ideas from various sources such as customer feedback, competitors' products, market research, and internal teams (sales, marketing, customer service, etc.). Create a list of potential features and functionalities. Evaluate each feature based on its potential impact on customers, feasibility, and alignment with your product's vision and strategy. Some commonly used criteria for evaluation include user value, business value, implementation complexity, and risk.

Before prioritizing features, validate your assumptions about customer needs and preferences. Conduct market research, gather user feedback, and analyze data to ensure that your prioritization decisions are based on accurate insights. By validating assumptions early in the process, you can minimize the risk of investing resources in features that may not resonate with your target audience.

Before defining assumptions, it's important to distinguish problems from noise. If 10 of your customers come to you with the same feedback, that's a real assumption that can be made. If 2 customers want a feature, the next 2 want another and so on, the impact of those features might be less significant. Especially in the beginning, you should avoid the noise and focus on a clear MVP even after the first iteration.

Use a prioritization framework to rank the features. Some popular frameworks include the RICE score (Reach, Impact, Confidence, and Effort), MoSCoW method (Must have, Should have, Could have, Won't have), and the Kano model (which classifies features into categories such as basic, performance, and delighter).

Feature Triage: Prioritize ruthlessly! Don't overwhelm users. After research and validation, prioritize features based on a three-factor analysis: Customer Demand: How many customers want this feature? Impact: How significantly will this feature improve the user experience? Feasibility: Can this feature be realistically developed within budget and time constraints? By ruthlessly prioritizing based on this framework, you'll focus on features that deliver maximum value to your customers.

It's nice to know that you have some formal frameworks to fall into for prioritization, but these will rarely work for you in a startup. (let me tell you a secret - they are made for corporations to pretend they spend resources in the best possible way) You need to prioritise, that's no question, but you will have to figure out the best way to do it for your product and your clients. Every feature you develop will influence other features' usage, the possibility to add new features, it will add some or no value to your main customers' work. And here you go back to point 1 - you need to deeply understand the job to be done for your users and prioritisation will flow from there.

In my experience, it's far less important to nail the product feature set than to ship your MVP and let the users tell you what needs to be added, removed, or rebuilt altogether. We all need a more precise and almost aggressive view of how we will deliver value to our customers. Your new secret sauce will be a tiny, unexpected, but hugely valuable insight into your customers' lives, emotions, and irrational behaviours. Team effort should be prioritized on understanding the alchemy of human behaviour and discovering the “aha moments.” This will effortlessly remove all other to-do items. Authenticity of understanding beats bells and whistles every time.

Zero in on what your 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗶𝗺 to achieve. By grasping their struggles, you can prioritize features that boost user satisfaction the most. Identify User Jobs: Ask open-ended questions like, "What tasks are you trying to accomplish with our product?" and "What frustrations do you encounter?" These questions will reveal the core needs your product can address. Prioritize by Impact: Once you understand user jobs, assess how each feature addresses these issues. Focus on developing the features that have the most significant impact on user success and satisfaction.

Prioritization is not a one-time activity, but a continuous process as customer needs, market dynamics, and business priorities change over time. It requires a balance between meeting immediate customer needs and investing in features that will deliver long-term value.
