RAID and NAS are not directly comparable. They belong to different kinds of storage technologies. DAS (Direct Attached Storage), NAS, and SAN (Storage Area Network) are ways to distribute and provision storage atoms to one or more computing systems (CS). DAS and SAN atoms (blocks) are provided to CSs in DAS via SCSI (usually) and in SANs via fibre channel. NAS provides its atoms (files) via LAN to CSs. DAS provides blocks to one CS. NAS and SAN provide their atoms to many CSs. JBOD, RAID setups, and single disks are ways to arrange HD drives or SSDs to gain capacity, throughput, availability, or combinations. Comparing the two kinds of technologies is not helpful, since any disk-layer arrangement may reside inside a DAS, SAN, or NAS.

I currently have two external hard drives attached to my Windows PC as extra storage. I've bought a third external drive but not plugged it in yet. I'm looking for a way to gain redundancy for all my stored data, ideally both on the PC itself and on the external drives. So, for example, if an external HD fails or my PC fails I don't lose data. Is RAID or NAS the best solution? Does it matter if the drives are different sizes? (I bought my external drives at different times.)
