What do you do if you want to avoid repeating the mistakes of others in the consulting industry?

Simple. Know what you are talking about and don't venture into areas you are uncertain. Also, don't repeat stuff unless you know it is correct. Too many consultants echo things that are nonsense.

Before you jump into consultancy service, you need to: 1. Groom yourself for many years in all aspects of the trade / business. 2. Establish your network pretty well by attending seminars, conferences and participating as a speaker. This will help you gain recognition. 3. Gather knowledge and experience of all areas of the business. 4. Groom yourself, your personality, your language skills, conversational skills, and convincing power. Only then you can dive successfully into this.

As a Professor and consultant with over 20 years of industry experience, I've had the privilege of working with various blockchain and technology startups, enterprises, and academic institutions. Throughout my career, I've witnessed firsthand the mistakes that can be made in the consulting industry, particularly when it comes to emerging technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence, and data analytics. To avoid repeating these mistakes, I prioritize staying up-to-date with the latest developments and best practices in the industry. In consulting, especially in the large projects that involve many people and cover hundreds of processes, it is almost not possible to avoid mistakes. With a growth mindset we see the mistakes as source for improvement. I found it very useful to have Lessons learned sessions, when all team members are sharing their experiences. The listed, structured and with added action points, the failures become like a recipe for cooking a good cake. Other way to get the knowledge from other and not by my own experience, are the feedback sessions. One to one, or in the team, the conclusions benefit a lot. So, in the nutshell it is not a big issue to made a mistake. The worst is when it is repeated again and again, and no actions are taken to avoid it.

It is not only helpful to build network outside but also within your team and organisation, to understand how they have dealth with situations which are more likely to arise in your journey as well. Since, consulting projects are mostly a function of time driven delivery, reaching out to peers, seniors and sometimes even the new joiners helps! Be it some new shortcut to a new tool or a new source to gather data or to learn how to deal with a tough client! Consulting is an industry which thrives on human interaction!

As an introvert, I used to dread networking events. But I learned focusing on just 2-3 genuine conversations is more impactful than collecting business cards. Online groups have also been great! Sharing an article with thoughtful commentary has led to more valuable connections than any cocktail hour.

One wouldn’t know where they are if they don’t stop to look at the surroundings, one wouldn’t know if they’re doing well or not, if they don’t stop to reflect on the actions and reactions. Reflecting is a powerful way to improve oneself, look inwards, on ourselves and our team, to have a clear picture of how to prevent or avoid any mistakes that was made.

Inspect and Adapt is one of the key principles of Agile methodology and not only is it applicable across industries but also true for personal growth. We don't have the luxury of making all the mistakes in the world, we can learn from experiences of others and navigate our path accordingly. Success or failure is the final outcome of your efforts. What matters is are we willing to tread on the path which leads to self improvement or not

Reflection is a powerful tool in self development. There should be no bias, no shame, no fear. Just an honest, clear-headed look at what went well, and what didn't go so well. Reflecting with colleagues is good as it is a helpful way to practice sharing negative as well as positive feedback. Keeping a journal is also good as it gives you a lasting record of your thoughts which can be reviewed at any time.

My go to Mantra is always - Regular Self Reflection! This beautiful process allows me to get a better clarity on my way of working and what I'm supposed to work through for better outcomes! This introspective process allows me to see my own gaps so that I can set a new Direction to approach my work / idea to get the RIGHT result. More importantly, self Reflection helps me with Self Realisation and sets the required Repair mechanism for me to Transform into a Better Human Being for Life, hence this mantra is very very dear for me! Adaptability is key.. This means understanding what your users want and being open to different approaches, not just what has always been done. Being able to think inside and outside the box is critical.

You must be true to yourself. At the end of the day, you are your own image to the face of clients, so maintaining communication with your client is an absolute must. But you yourself as the consultant must also be willing to grow, adapt, and learn. Mistakes teach lessons that often can't be found in a book. And that only genuine connections and experiences can navigate.

I would go to the fundamentals. Consulting is a craft of blending specific expertise with client's context to solve a specific problem. A mistake can be attributed to: 1. Gap in specific expertise needed 2. Understanding and defining Context 3. Making a specific Problem statement 4. Combination of above One can work with a framework based on above principles and can avoid not only repeating the mistakes of others but also those likely not documented.

Consulting is a people business. Irrespective of methodologies, practices and approach, all of which are slightly modified amongst those engaged in the consulting business, it is people that buy people’s services - based on credibility, establishing trust all whilst taking the risk in engaging with services. Having spent significant portion of my career in consulting, my experience would suggest working on building credibility and trust with the buyer of the services engaged, deliver to expectations as discussed and drive high level of accountability and integrity to the delivery. There is no magic recipe for success as every engagement differs and has its own set of circumstances or challenges.
