What do you do if you want to enhance your translation skills and become a professional interpreter?

Practicing regularly and seeking feedback is key to becoming a proficient interpreter.One important practicing strategy is ‘Shadowing’. Shadowing is when the interpreter listens to a speaker in one language and simultaneously ‘shadows’ their words out aloud. To practice shadowing effectively, choose materials in your target language, such as speeches, TED Talks, or news broadcasts, and listen carefully while interpreting the content in real-time. Focus on maintaining accuracy, fluency, and coherence. Gradually increase the difficulty of the material and challenge yourself with different accents, speeds, and topics. Regular practice and feedback are key to improving your shadowing skills as an interpreter.

First of all, being fluent in two languages is just a start. If you want to be a professional interpreter, the fastest way is to go to a school or take courses where you can learn specific skills (shadowing, retention, note taking, glossary building, etc), practice in simulated environment and scenarios, and receive regular feedback and correction from your teacher. I am aware that some people become really good interpreters without formal education, but in my case, I am glad I invested in my education because it is so hard to receive honest feedback from professional linguists once you start working.

Seeking feedback I believe is important, however, seeking constructive feedback is the key. Don't be afraid of making mistakes and when someone says that is not correct, don't just take it, make sure you know if it is not correct for them or is not correct within the language, as it makes a big difference.

First of all, while translation and interpretation have some common elements, they represent different skill sets. You cannot just transition from one to the other without training (though this training may be informal). Secondly, learn what the legal and regulatory requirements are for interpreters in the country you live. You may need to pass tests or be certified for certain types of interpretation jobs.

Start with the basics foundational difference between Translation and of Interpreting. Translation is working with the written word and Interpreting is working with the spoken word. Professionals in these fields never use these terms interchangeably. They are two different fields of work and require very different skill sets. In order to decide which of these two fields you want to pursue, you should research the tasks required in the many industries that hire translators and then learn about the four fields of interpreting: Legal/Judicial, Medical, Conference and Education. Beyond your language fluency do an honest self-assessment of your self- discipline, your dedication to accuracy and your ability to constantly learn terminology.

There are various websites where one can offer freelance interpretation or translations services. Those are a fantastic opportunity to grow your network and gain experience.

If possible look for internships, or part-time jobs with close friends, colleagues, or companies that may need translating services, for you to get experience. Nowadays there are several online tools that provide good opportunities as freelancers to get into the world of translation or interpreting. Be patient.

To excel as an interpreter, consider specializing in areas aligning with your interests or expertise. For example, if you have a medical background, medical interpreting can be a natural fit. Your existing knowledge will enhance your understanding and accuracy. Specializing also opens doors to niche markets, where demand for skilled interpreters is high. By focusing on areas you're passionate about, you'll not only excel but also find greater job satisfaction.

Usually the area you specialize in, will match your interests. This is the best way to ensure you enjoy what you are doing and excel at the job.

You can go beyond the legal and medical fields. Learn the terminology and get familiar with the use of interpreters in fields such as Education, Sports, Science, Entertainment, to name a few.

In my area, the options for certification are currently limited to health care and court interpretation. Despite the fact that my goal was to specialize in educational interpretation, I studied for and took the health care exam. I started off as a healthcare interpreter. Becoming certified wasn't just learning healthcare terminology. It was, most importantly, about learning and then demonstrating that I have the skills necessary to be a professional interpreter. This is something necessary for any specialization you choose.

I’ve witnessed certified translators work for a firm and/or work independently as a 1099. As you become well versed in the community, you are on high demand for your services.

If you don’t want to hire the wrong professional be mindful of this: An interpreter interprets verbal communication from one language to another, while a translator translates written communication.

Glossaries and dictionaries help ensure accurate translations of specialized terminology. Note-taking systems assist in capturing key points and nuances, aiding memory and coherence. Technology plays a crucial role, with digital tools enabling real-time research and collaboration. Effective use of these tools requires practice and familiarity, but they significantly improve the quality and efficiency of interpretation, benefiting both the interpreter and the client.

Set yourself up for success. Prepare for interpreting work by studying materials in advance. Sometimes they don’t have material to give you, but you should ask. When interpreting small meetings and presentations always ask for the topic/subject matter and reference materials or website so that you can review the terminology and prepare.

After spending three years living in China and another three years in advanced language courses during grad school (my thesis dealt with one aspect of a historical narrative from the Warring States period), I would spend time in informal settings discussing current affairs with native language speakers and reading Chinese language newspapers.

Educate yourself on rates. Understand what to charge for your services, and how to come up with a rate that you feel comfortable with. Please don’t undercharge just to get a client. That can impact the rates in your area and sets you up for continuous low rates, in the end, it does not help the profession. There are courses to help you understand how and what to charge and other interpreters that are willing to help show you their methods. Don’t underestimate your experience and expertise.

I think all the points are correct but it can also depends on one's work. Talking about myself, I started interpreting from French to Kòlò(an indigenous language) and vice versa because the translation was complex, due to the language's orality and lack of glossaries. Nowadays, researches are allowing us to master grammar, vocabulary, even more, applying to and translation procedures while dealing with the language.

Interpretation and translation are two different things requiring different sets of skills and devices. Please begin by separating the two as not all interpreters are translators and vice-versa.
