Usability, heuristics, information architecture, UX research (all of the different methods and techniques), interaction design principles, and interface design are ALL critical to the discipline. If you want to secure your relevance, you'll need to invest in development of the associated acumen.

In the dynamic world of UX design, mastering the fundamentals is just the start. Diving into psychology offers insights into user behavior, enhancing intuitive designs. Understanding emerging technologies like AI and VR also fuels innovation. Developing soft skills such as empathy, communication, and teamwork is crucial, as these facilitate effective design translation and stakeholder engagement. Networking within the community keeps one informed and opens doors to collaboration. Maintaining an updated portfolio showcases your growth and adaptability, proving your worth in the competitive job market.

Be proactive. This principle helps everyone who wants to be ‘wanted’ (in good sense) by any organisation. UX skills such as researching, analysing, empathising, strategising, designing and rationalising and presenting are essential for any ux designer. Any three of these core skills will make this ux designer ‘wanted’.

I don't know if skill is the right word here, or could we say talent instead... but it requires a re-discovery of what you do best after 15-20 years of doing hands-on design. I was a designer, today, I am a story teller. Story telling includes design, interaction, awareness of the market, and a maturity towards embracing emerging tech. We don't master fundamentals anymore, its part of us already. Data should prove that we have created effective design! That's the verdict to stay relevant.

Being a computer engineering graduate greatly helps me in my daily job as a UX Designer. If you know just the basics, of how the code works, you bridge the gap between design and development, fostering smoother communication with the developers. This skill further helps in building prototypes - letting the developers know the actual look and feel of the product.

From my perspective, getting into data analysis in UX is like discovering a goldmine of insights. By understanding user data, I can make designs that people love and that help the business succeed. Let’s say I'm working on designing a new mobile app. By analyzing data such as how users interact with similar apps, I can uncover trends like which features are most popular or where users tend to get stuck. For instance, if I notice that users often abandon similar apps during the checkout process, I might prioritize simplifying the payment flow in my design. This data-driven approach ensures that my design decisions are based on what users actually need and want, ultimately leading to a more successful app.

In my experience, numbers provide you with actual ground to make design decisions. The strength of data analysis lies in bridging the gap between perception and reality. While countless courses offer data analysis training, UX research requires a unique blend of both quantitative and qualitative analysis skills. Honing these skills allows you to extract powerful insights from user data. Remember, interpreting the data isn't just a step – it's the crux of UX research! It's what transforms raw numbers and user quotes into actionable knowledge that fuels exceptional design decisions.

Before you learn how to analyse data learn about data, data architecture, data catalogue, data points, the relationship between different types of data, endpoints and some the fundamentals of data science such as structured, semi structured and unstructred data. Every piece of evidence that you capture through your research offers a multitude of data points. Whether qualitative or quantitative. It will make your research a lot more focused and aot more valuable Understanding this will allow you to apply design and solve highly complex challenges using AI and ML

Agile methodologies keep you constantly testing, iterating, and perfecting your designs. This dynamic approach allows you to seamlessly integrate new technologies as they emerge, ensuring your product remains cutting-edge and user-centric. To stay relevant in today's ever-evolving landscape, Agile development is your solution.

This is key to success. We iterate a product through whatever variations necessary until we settle on something we know paints clear expectations, is easy to navigate, and gets the user to their goal with minimal friction. Be open to revisions, let your mistakes inform future efforts, and always take notes on feedback. Having a team you can review with is your greatest asset. Ask every question you that pops up, pitch anything you think is relevant, even if just to learn why it won't work.

Nowadays we see that in a few months anyone can develop a new skill or use AI and use it professionally almost immediately. In this panorama, I see that the set of skills are embedded in the number of tools available in the creative-auto-tech universe. And so, it became more important to be agile with the base skills and capabilities, where I'm good at, and start strengthening and adding the necessary tools to stay relevant and in-demand.

"It's not just what you know, it's who you know" – but in UX design, it's both! Sharpening your skills is crucial, but building a strong network unlocks invaluable benefits. Meaningful connections with industry professionals foster knowledge exchange, creating a vibrant ecosystem where everyone learns and grows.

Networking makes it much easier and faster for you to grow. When you have a strong connection with people in the same niche and even in different niche, it makes you get more exposure and opportunity. Do you know that when you post your work, 99% of the time, it's your connections that will engage with it, your friends, people you know and interact with, afterwards strangers will start engaging too. Now if you check the algorithm. People you know helps drive in people you do not know.

Like any network – the bigger the network, the further you can reach. As a community of creative professionals, the more we share our knowledge and insights, the more we can grow from all these “seeds”.

There are no guarantees to stay in high demand long-term as a designer, but a few things can greatly increase your chances: - Being business savvy and having a commercial sensibility: Learning how design work influences profits and getting knowledgeable about business models and product unit economics is a must - The #1 in-demand skill now is adaptability, hence being multi-disciplinary is huge. Adopting (at least basic) skills in coding, data analysis or computer science can open new previously unthinkable opportunities - As the AI boom is upon us, it’s not a surprise that having a solid understanding and practical hands-on experiences with LLMs and Generative AI will lead to tremendous competitive advantages All the best!

There is no one-way approach to go about a user research or a particular problem, some might work and some might not have the same steps of action. Only empathy and talking to users, being considerate of them, not being too attached to your design will be easier; as your project will help a lot to be clear in the mind as of to whom and why are you designing should be the constant questions you ask yourself and not be bias towards the design.

Based on the current job market scenario, I see there is saturation in hard skills. A lot of designers are taking the mentioned points in the article seriously and getting better at it. But I think to be in high demand in the market, the following things might be helpful: - Have a strong presence on social media like LinkedIn and be active in the community. You will be approached if you're known. - Showcasing your work like an artist is important, this is the world of show biz. - Having good communication skills, being able to collaborate with any team or person and good storytelling is something I think will give extra edge to the designers because these skills are difficult to master, not everyone is good at it.

Find ways to embrace the characteristics that set you apart. What distinguishes you from other designers? Study and compare your work against other professional work, point out the key differences, and lean into those differences that makes you special. Once you can answer what special quality you can offer in your work, you’ve found what will keep you in demand.
