What do you do if your Product R&D work could benefit from artificial intelligence and machine learning?

Many AI projects fail because the business need or scope is not properly aligned. One of the first things to consider while assessing needs is to ask, does this process truly benefit from AI or is using AI the most efficient path forward to achieve our objective. Trying to leverage AI where it’s not needed can lead to wasted resources, failed projects and can breakdown trust among stakeholders. This could negatively impact the use of AI in the future for legitimate needs. Specifically in R&D, leveraging AI can offer a competitive advantage and is one of areas I typically recommend considering building your own AI solution rather than leveraging a COTS.

Adopting AI and ML in your product R&D is a forward-thinking move. First, pinpoint which parts of your process could gain from these technologies—like enhancing data analysis, streamlining testing, or improving design efficiency. Once identified, select AI and ML tools tailored to these areas. These technologies will not just automate repetitive tasks but also unlock deeper insights and boost productivity. Rather than building knowledge it is more effective to build a team of subject matter experts. Team should comprise of people with necessary skills like AI/ML professionals, domain specific BA, software engineers, architects, product managers etc. It is also important to have common language so that people from different domains can communicate with less ambiguity and effectively. As R&D activity can end up in failure, an appetite for fail fast is also a key consideration while building the team.

The first step is identifying how AI and ML can benefit our R&D efforts. As I am from the automotive industry I am talking with respect to this industry. So. identifying can be streamlining the design process, optimizing the manufacturing process, or enhance vehicle performance. Once these challenges are identified, the next step is to ensure our team has the necessary skills and knowledge to use AI and ML effectively. Building knowledge involves providing the team with training sessions or workshops and their application in your respective industry.

Choosing a tool considering your existing infrastructure is important. While selecting the tool look for tailored solutions that suit your industry. Another factor is compatibility. The tool should easily integrate, minimize disruptions, and increase efficiency. Community support is another considerable factor. Choose a tool with more active user communities that helps in troubleshooting if required.

Executive leadership sponsorship and support is the first thing to pursue. Then identifying the clear problem statement and methodology to leverage AI for product R&D is imperative. Something, this needs a thorough brainstorming and discussion with peers. Operationalizing the AI methodology is the most important outcome out of this brainstorming. If an AI methodology is not possible to be operationalized, then it is not a good idea to pursue such approaches. Once the above is done, then the strategy is fully clear to all parties and the next steps are Planning & Implementation. Many a time implementation is more difficult than strategizing and in other cases honing the strategy is more difficult. The key to get into this fully informed.

Use GenAI in R&D only for enlarging your horizon. Do not use it as the main source of information. Why? Disinformation, hallucinations, but, above all, uncontrolled sources of information (you may get SF ideas instead of cutting-edge technologies from actual science). As for ML, make sure your ML is not biased by anyone's ideas or you will end up implementing those ideas instead of new ideas.
