What do you do if your project team members are not meeting your expectations?

My strategy is to give the Team member some time, cut him or her some slack. There could be one or more issues that could be bothering him/her.Second step is to have a simple and emphatic discussion clearly highlighting the expectations and gaps. Third step could be to again wait and watch, monitor progress. This can be followed by a repeat discussion to realign, reapreciate or reprimand as the case may be. Give time and let the person rise up to the requirement, but if that doesn't happen even after repeated counselling- then probably its time to replace or remove from current project. Sometimes it is better to let go rather than wait for required improvement. Playing the match with a substitute or one player less is also a strategy!

Great advice by all, but I'll add that we need to look in the mirror as well. Learn from this situation: was the goal or role clear? What motivates and inspires their work and what can you do to help? Did they face roadblocks that you didn't see? Managing a team (no matter if they report directly to you or not) is never a one way street.

Underperforming team? Don't panic! Talk to them, understand challenges, and set clear goals together. Create an improvement plan with support and regular check-ins. If needed, consider reassigning tasks. Focus on solutions, be empathetic, and celebrate progress!

At what point do you realise that there is a situation with expectation? Project stages must be clearly defined at the start and each successful stage ticked off. This way, it will be easier to identify issues or potential issues for clarification or rectification. Waiting till a problem arises is not a professional way to manage a project.

Never assume ill intent. Find out what motivates your team member and adjust your approach Find out if something is going on in thier personal life causing extra pressure.

The first thing I would do is to have an open and honest conversation with them. Explain what your expectations are and where they are falling short in a respectful manner. Get their perspective as well. Try to understand whether these expectations are explicitly communicated or you have implied it or assumed your team member understands. Once the expectations are clearly defined and agreed to, check if there are any barriers. Help them overcome those barriers. If it's an issue with commitment or motivation, try to understand the root causes. And, jointly arrive at a plan to take corrective action. The key is to address issues directly but also provide support without presumptions.

In my experience, using open dialogue is crucial to improve members performance because of finding main issues. This methods leads to transparency and shows that we value their input and well-being. At first, we have to listen our members opinion carefully. Then, we should try to our ideas after getting trast worthy.

In my opinion, i would listen to my team member first where he is having problems. I will try to address his problem and resolve them on an immediate basis. After that will apply a new strategy to achieve a set goals

The first thing I'd try to do is a Root Cause Analysis to dive down and find reasons for poor performance. Then I'd organise a retrospective to allow everyone air their opinions in a safe and non-judgemental environment. The results from these 2 exercises will provide powerful insights as to how best to formulate an improvement strategy.

After the common understanding the challenges , put forth a plan that has short term tasks so the stakeholders can see immediate action. Then map out a longer term plan to address the more difficult issues that is documented with achievable and SMART.

In my opinion, setting objectives are very important to look at a same page with our members. As a tip, we should use SMART to prevent leaking significant information. In addition, showing prioritize tasks and setting milestones can support track progress surely.

One thing I have found is the process of listing features, prioritizing them, and the generating specific and measurable requirements. No fuzzy areas. Lots of action items with milestones and schedules.

Assuming that the parties had clearly aligned expectations and that they had the skills to achieve the agreed objectives, and even so, the team did not achieve the objectives, the leader needs to meet with the team and review the objectives that have already been presented according to the SMART technique and include the I WANT agreements, this is what the leader and the team want to happen; I DO NOT WANT, which the leader and the team do not want under any circumstances to occur and the NON-NEGOTIABLE, that is, for the points highlighted there will be no negotiation, no apology, review of deadlines, etc.

Settings SMART objectives will enable any team to focus and deliver . The team will be geared towards known KPIS and work towards achieving them . The deliverables will be clear and measurable. Specific outcomes will determine success.

Projects are schedule driven and it’s critical to ensure right resources with relevant skills, options for training and timelines adjustment might jeopardize the project completion and on budget. I have seen leaders straight take strategy adjustments; the approach worked

It is essential to provide support to the team, and it depends on the personality of each of its members, the type of support they require must be adjusted... in some cases, it will be necessary to sit down to discuss and review the work done, in others, give them security, with someone else, it may simply be the review and with others, letting them do their job. The problem can be that everyone is honest in front of a group and might say they are further on than they are. Take time one to one to see the proof you need to know the project is on the right track. There can also be external issues that might make the plan fail. Allow people time to consider any outside influences you may not know about. Never assume anyone will tell you as they in turn assume you know.

The fundamental aspect is defining the expectations. More often than not, the expectations from leaders/ managers is quite vague lacking quantifiable metrics. First thing to do is translate expectations in measurable milestones. Check their understanding of your expectations. Do not use vague vocabulary like ASAP, at the earliest, soon etc. Convey in concrete language which can not be interpreted differently. Keep reviewing every milestone and course correct accordingly. Sometimes it could be a skill issue; does the team member have relevant knowledge/skills/resources to navigate the project successfully.

Self-reflection Ask these questions: Is my ask legitimate? Am I expecting to see myself among the team members? Is the task goal oriented or just reflects upon my achievement? Am I communicating properly of what I am looking for? The solution lies within these answers
