What do you do if you're facing a layoff and need help finding new job opportunities?

Activate your network! Many people, especially women, often feel shame and anxiety when facing job loss. As the saying goes, a crisis is an opportunity. Take action by updating your resume. Ask friends and colleagues for letters of recommendations, job referrals, and introductions to industry leaders. Maximize your LinkedIn network. Attend industry events and volunteer to shine a light on your talents. Take courses to upgrade your skills. And, set aside time for family and self-care. Create an exit strategy - if a large severance is not an option, find the courage to leave on your own terms and timeline.

A layoff is the best time to brush up your knowledge, skills and competencies. Learn something new , the latest in your field which you meant to learn but could not get time to learn due to work pressure. Take a notebook and write down your strengths and your unique skills that can be useful to the world of work. Look back at your career and identify what your learnt over the years. Pick up your core competency and chisel it. I read somewhere that whenever you are faced with a setback and crisis, go back to your core competency and start again. There is a silver lining for every cloud

During a transitional period such as a layoff, it's crucial to take proactive steps to enhance skills and stay competitive. Investing in professional development through online courses, workshops, or certifications can provide valuable opportunities for growth. Additionally, seeking support from career counselors, mentors, or support groups can offer guidance and encouragement during this challenging time. Maintaining a positive attitude and persistence in job search efforts are essential, as is remembering that a layoff does not define one's worth or capabilities. By staying resilient, adaptable, and proactive, individuals can navigate this period effectively and find new opportunities aligned with their career goals and aspirations.

As soon as you suspect a layoff might be imminent, it's crucial to honestly assess your financial situation and professional standing. Start by reviewing your savings and creating a budget that can sustain you through a potential period of unemployment. Simultaneously, evaluate your skill set and consider how it aligns with current job market trends. This dual focus on finances and skills will help you create a realistic plan of action and reduce stress during this transitional phase.

A former CIO of mine once told me to always keep your resume and your skillset updated so that in the unfortunate event of a layoff, you are ready for your next assignment. Invest in yourself. One of my Clifton Strengths is learning, so I am always in training, learning about new technology and how I can apply it to be more effective, efficient and relative. Volunteering and mentoring through professional networks can also provide opportunities. Stay engaged.

Collaboration? -Identify targets: Research relevant CEOs/leaders. -Leverage connections: Seek introductions or advice. -Attend industry events: Look for panels, networking opportunities. -Engage on social media: Follow and comment on their posts. -Find common ground: Shared experiences, interests build rapport. -Offer value: Share expertise, articles, or connect them with valuable contacts. -Follow up & maintain connection: Thank them, stay connected with updates. Be patient, persistent, and focus on providing value as you build connections!

I opine that Networking and updating skills are very successful for me. If people possess these skills even if companies layoff you can find a better one

It is in your best interest to update your resume every time you attain a skill, achieve a quantifiable goal, receive a promotion, and/or obtain a degree. This way, you can always have your resume ready to pass along prior to finding yourself at risk for a termination and/or layoffs. You are your greatest asset. Show it! Organize your resume to reflect the types of roles you are applying to with the skills and certifications they are looking for. Be clear and concise with what actionable verbs to describe what you did to contribute to all the success you have. No more summaries. Share what they can expect you to do if you are selected.

A one page resume is all you need today. Focus on your experience and your "USP" (Unique selling point) - avoid generic statements like "team player" - include data and numbers in terms of your results in previous roles - share something about how you imagine your future and how you imagine contributing to the world

1. Update your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your most recent experience and skills. I got my current job through LinkedIn after my previous contract ended. 2. Reach out to your professional network for job leads and referrals. I reached out to many of the people I had worked with on previous projects dating back ten years. I received some job advertisements and even attended an interview for one of them. 3. Utilize online job search platforms and job boards to explore job opportunities in your field. I signed onto several of these platforms and got some jobs. 4. Stay positive and proactive during this challenging time. Many people have successfully navigated layoffs and found new and fulfilling opportunities.

The most important thing for me is the network of relationships. The network is like a tree: it needs to be watered, fertilized and, sometimes, pruned. Keeping your network active is a daily job, regardless of your career stage, whether you are employed or not. Therefore, long before facing a layoff, it is necessary to act daily to keep the network healthy. Write articles, send messages to colleagues, give lectures, schedule lunches and happy hours, in short, always have your circle of contacts well fed.

"Networking is vital," pretty much says it all. I would recommend including third party vendors or consultants in your job search outreach. Recently, my cousin was facing a layoff and mentioned it to a company that her company contracted with and now she works for the contracted company!

Working in outplacement for a majority of my coaching career, I would say that this is the secret weapon of the individuals who are able to seize upon the sudden loss of a job as a pivot to something truly remarkable and growth enabling in the arc of their career. When you connect with others, you get the benefits of additional perspective and insights, the weight and influence of their resources, and have a direct and immediate gateway to their full network as well. Networking gives your job search exponential reach and momentum.

One of the best ways to network is right here on LinkedIn! If there are certain jobs you are interested in, then send a request to the hiring manager. You can always share your interest in the role and/or allow the conversation to organically take place. From there, you can commit at least one hour per week connecting with people who are in the role you wish to have in the future. This way, you can already have people to reach out to as opposed to waiting until a layoff occurs. Be genuine in your conversations. Those people may be willing to mentor you and/or offer advice. See if there are webinars or workshops you can join in on to meet colleagues across your field. There's power in knowing the right people!

Amid the chaotic trying times in the Pandemic, my son from no where asked me, "Dad, what's your second plan if you have to give up your current teaching profession? At first I was flabbergasted by a tertiary student (A Level). Then with my kids advice, I started planning for utilizing those trying times in learning new skills and believing in honing current skills, too. Now, I'm receiving offers from different nook and corners from my hinterland. Soon, I'm to resume my previous work.

Temporary Work or Freelancing: Consider taking temporary work or freelancing opportunities to gain experience and income while searching for a permanent position. Skills Development: Use this time to enhance your skills through online courses, workshops, or certifications. This can make you more marketable to potential employers. Consult a Career Counsellor: If you're struggling to navigate your job search or need assistance with career planning, consider consulting a career counsellor or coach who can provide guidance and support.

Asking for help is a superpower. In my quarterly newsletter to friends, investors, and partners I always start with a short ask for help on something I am struggling with. It has yielded incredible results over the years. JUST ASK!

Being laid off and/or terminated is not an easy thing to face. This impacts your emotionally, mentally, physically, and emotionally. You will spend a third of your life working. Don't you think you deserve to care for yourself after such a huge change in your life? I personally go to counseling services from BetterHelp, and the group therapy sessions are useful, especially concerning changes in the workforce. Take the time to seek out this support. Prayer can help ground you. Exercise more often. Hydrate yourself. This is the time to heal so you can go into your next role with a clean slate. Leave the baggage behind and step into your new destiny.

The most important part of experiencing a huge or unexpected change, is to have support. The ability to share and express your feelings and to be heard by some who cares and understands you. Once you have spoke to it, released it you will and can land in acceptance of the loss.

I'm profoundly interest in research related works to pursue in upcoming days. In this regards, there is no short cut except seeking support from the experts of their disciplines.

Job searching can be challenging, but maintaining a positive attitude and staying persistent can increase your chances of success. Especially before an interview Set achievable goals for yourself and celebrate small victories along the way.

If you are seeking volunteer work to supplement your professional skills, consider how the opportunity can help highlight your abilities within the industry you work in. It’s also important to be mindful of the time commitment you’re making. Consider if the volunteer position is something you can maintain after securing employment or if the volunteer position is temporary. Soul-feeding volunteer work at its core is not self-serving and aligns with your values and professional mission.

Volunteer work is a great way to invest time as it has a lot of different ways that can happen: 1. You can volunteer at a foundation in your city where hands are needed for a few hours a day. 2. You can volunteer in a different country committing full-time for a few months. 3. You can volunteer to help your friends and family, specially those who are entrepreneurs, by working on topics you might be an expert on, and where they might need help. 4. You can volunteer some hours a week working at a company you like. Do so by connecting with someone whose role you like and would enjoy knowing more about. This is a great way to open doors at that company in the future as well. ¡Volunteering helps you keep active and feel a sense of purpose!

Plan B works best when it is driven by motivation and not desperation accelerated by the sudden urgency. It´s always a better approach to pursue what you want to do or upskilling your area of interests while currently having a job. Chances are, you will either: - Make some extra money on top of your monthly income - Acquired many skills that are complementary to the skill set that you are actively practicing at work - Network with people from different industries apart from your current network at your workplace I learned this first hand by being stubborn and not giving up on what I want to do the most (which is purely irrelevant to my current job). Follow your dreams. Do not settle with your job. Unleash your potential :)

For this one, I'll get personal. Six months ago I went to Japanese immigration to renew my work visa. I'd done it successfully for the past 16 years. I was told: " In 16 days you need to either find a job in Japan that makes at least ¥220,000 / month, or leave Japan. " With nothing to lose & a slim chance to gain, I posted my situation with complete honesty & transparency onto LinkedIn & Facebook. It was the ONLY action I took, I received ONE reply & one job offer, which I accepted. Besides the obvious networking, don't hesitate to do something unconventional, authentic, honest, vulnerable & transparent. In a clickbait world, it cuts through the noise. tim #bgreen🌏

Job lay off can impact if not handled positively. We need to understand that each situation can be an opportunity and as it rightly said “There is no age limit for learning”. Consider this layoff time as an opportunity, analyse your skills, upgrade if needed, speak to colleagues and experts. Utilise this time as much as you can to discover yourself.

Learn and practise the STAR method? Situation: Set the scene and give the necessary details of your example. Task: Describe what your responsibility was in that situation. Action: Explain exactly what steps you took to address it. Result: Share what outcomes your actions achieved.

This could be a good time to sit back and rethink how you would like to grow your career. Often times we panic when layoff hits us and rush into finding the next job without thinking if this the best path forward. So try not to let panic take over. There are always ways to get by. Instead of taking the victim's mindset thinking why you are so unfortunate, believe in your ability to make situations better for you and your family. Maybe this is the good time for you to switch to a new career. Maybe you are better off this way! Open up your mind and be courageous to take actions toward a better future.
