What are the principles of biophilic design?

One common misconception regarding Biophilic design is the perception of higher upfront costs. Many individuals and organizations hesitate to invest in such designs due to the belief that incorporating natural elements significantly increases initial expenses. However, studies have shown that while there might be a slightly higher upfront cost, the long-term benefits, such as increased productivity, improved well-being, and energy efficiency, often outweigh the initial investment. Conventional structures however do not require any more specialized expertise as non-conventional, this cost can however be reduced if organizations seek professionals with specialized expertise as a value addition.

Biophilic design cultivates this emotional pull through immersive experiences. Begin by assessing the targeted emotional tone and key interactions desired. A bank branch requires different habitats than a creative studio to evoke distinct reactions. Infuse space with natural textures, sounds, scents and shapes. Cisco imported regional plant life and materials into their offices to ground staff to native ecosystems and rituals. Consider fractal geometries and ergonomic variability over rigid order - think forest floors not fake lawns. Non-conformity sparks curiosity. Balance necessities like light and shelter with playful discovery. Hidden alcoves and rooftop oases reward exploration. Wander, don't just consume space.

Biophilic design in architecture and urban environments has multiple criteria. Assessment of existing context and future projects is vital in this respect and needs to follow theoretical frameworks and valid measures based on local conditions. Here, I will focus on 3 connected principles that I think should be considered in biophilic design conventions: 1- Urban-rural interface (urban fringe) 2- Tourism 3- Small and medium-sized towns Please continue reading the next perspectives

1-Urban-Rural interface: Urban fringe has identical characteristics, very different from city center and rural area but affected by both. Generally, in transition from agriculture, small production and workshop economy to migrant housing and young families attractor due to urban growth, urban fringe areas still show high social capital and sense of belonging. We have to ensure not disturb and change these qualities by extra interference and large-scale projects. We also need to make sure while we provide affordable housing, we don't destroy the existing agricultural lands. So coding and zoning need to be very restrictive and limit the improvements in main local/residential streets of the area.

In simple terms, the future of biophilic design involves making nature an integral part of our living and working spaces. It's about creating environments that enhance well-being by incorporating elements inspired by nature, and this approach is expected to become a standard practice as people increasingly recognize its value.

2-Tourism: There are observations of eco-tourism and short trips on weekends from metropolitan areas to the outskirts not only because of better weather and higher air quality but also gardening and organic food. This presents an opportunity for suburbs and the countryside to grow an alternative function. However, this tourism will lead to the urban population wanting to buy properties and neglection the landuse and local economy that destroys small gardens, pollutes water streams, and changes property atmosphere and prices (causing gentrification). A holistic approach to biophilic design needs to consider these trends and put specific strategies in place to prevent the decay of natural habitats.

Vernacular systems, including traditional construction techniques, should be acknowledged and integrated where feasible. This not only preserves cultural identity but also often proves sustainable and cost-effective. This involves understanding and respecting the local culture, traditional building methods, and the specific context of the community. For instance, incorporating elements from local flora and fauna that hold cultural significance can enhance the connection between the built environment and the community. And as a Culture-centered designer myself, I believe contextual analysis of not just the physical environment is important, but also the spiritual connotation to space.

3-Small and medium-sized towns: Small towns emit less carbon, are less busier and more localized. They provide a lot of services for settlements around them. In my opinion, these services from education to healthcare and transportation will be crucial for their survival because they are losing their agriculture/ light industrial function. Now the question is why there is not enough attention to small towns which are shrinking. Why their suitable location in the region is bypassed and torn apart via highways? How can these hubs be designed in a sustainable and accessible manner? Which biophilic design strategies and nature-based solutions are appropriate for them?
