Why is teacher mentoring important for experienced teachers?

Experienced teachers are expected to mentor the younger ones for different reasons. First, when they mentor, they will also know more. They will also serve as sources of inspiration to the younger teachers. Apart from these, it also ensures succession because when the experienced teachers exit the system, they are sure that those left behind will uphold the integrity of the profession.

As an experienced teacher, I've found mentoring to be invaluable in my professional journey. I agree with what others have commented so far, but I also think it is critically important to provide mentorship (whether formal or informal) due to the general teacher shortage across the nation. Through the years I have taught students, I noticed I have had a natural tendency to mentor other teachers who happen to be younger than me by sharing my creativity when modifying lessons/activities. I also bring joy and put my heart out and work hard and hope that instills the love of teaching and integrity in our profession.

When you have a lot of experiences and a lot to share it is very beneficial to mentor experienced teachers. You have the opportunity to share your ideas with others and collaborate with them. As you watch your fellow teachers you can help them grow, watching for areas to improve. As a fellow mentor teacher you help provide a safe space to grow forward. You understand your fellow teachers and understand what they are going through. You can help listen, problem solve, and guide. You also feel validated and respected as people look at you for your expertise.

Mentoring can be difficult if your colleagues resent your guidance and feel threatened by your suggestions. It is important to build relationships and be careful to make suggestions and guide rather than act like you know it all. Listen to suggestions and encourage teachers to share their ideas and their successes. Many times more experienced staff is resistant to try new things or ways of doing things. Encourage teachers to step outside their comfort zones and change up their lesson planes and routines. Being open minded to new ideas enhances teaching. There are new strategies, research, and innovations happening all the time. Create a working team that supports each other. Good leaders lead by validating and collaborating.
