How can you train mentor teachers to support new teachers?

Provide mentors with skills to identify the learning styles of their mentees in order to best structure the training. A mentor with a wealth of experience is wasted if that if they are not able to pass it on in a way that the mentee can unstained and process. Encourage collaboration and critical thinking throughout the mentoring process so that the mentee feels empowered to continue their learning and development but also can see through the example of the mentor that learning is an ongoing process present at all stages of their career.

Just as much as new teachers need mentors, mentors themselves need to be equipped with the proper skill training through in-person workshops. This workshop should provide mentors with pracitcal guidance on establishing a healthy and on-going relationship with their mentees. In addition, teacher mentors should be supplied with appropriate resources and tools such as structured and practical action plans that target mentees needs and goals, planned timeframes for meetings, and be allowed with a flexible schedule that allows for ongoing support and evaluation of their mentee.

To train mentor teachers effectively, focus on developing a structured program that emphasizes active listening, constructive feedback, and goal-setting techniques. Incorporate adult learning theories to tailor the approach. Regular workshops and reflective sessions will enhance skills in real-time situations. Encourage a culture of continuous learning and mutual respect, ensuring mentors are well-equipped to support new teachers in their professional journey, fostering an environment of growth and collaboration within the educational framework.

I found that mentoring new teachers was just as much a learning experience for me as for them. I was learning as much about consolidating my teaching practice as they were developung theirs, and I was also developing my leadership skills. Being clear about the expectations, benefits and risks to mentor and mentee is important.

Without training, mentorships are unlikely to succeed; train the mentor and there's about a 1 in 3 chance, train both mentor and mentee and the success rate soars to 2 in 3 or more! Foundation skills include contracting, listening, questioning, goal-setting and reflection/feedback - and add on "withholding advice" for mentors. (Because mentoring is a conversation, dialogic skills are important for mentees as well). It's valuable to provide support in the form of checklists, worksheets, and tips, that are easily digestible and help the mentor to use models such as GROW, CLEAR, STEPPA, OSKAR etc to help guide the mentee's development process.

I notice that the general format of almost all of these LinkedIn articles is focused on steps, processes, and tools. All fine elements, but when you're working with people who are working with people, the tools are really secondary or tertiary to the ultimate engagement. Want to help a mentor help new teachers? Engage with the person in front of you. What inspires them to lead the next generation to find their voice, embrace their strengths, and stand in their power? What inspires them? What legacy do they want to leave as part of their work? Not every problem is a nail, so stop trying to use a hammer all the time.
