If you can’t measure your impact you can’t claim to be having any “social impact”—you need to consider impact measurement from the very start—and remember while mixed methods are best, don’t be snobby about qualitative data it is not less important than quantitative and gives rich insights!

Listen first: Conduct surveys, focus groups, and interviews to understand community needs. Data is your compass. Diverse crew: Gather a team with varied skills, backgrounds, and lived experiences. Embrace fresh perspectives. Goals with teeth: Set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Track impact, celebrate progress. Action, not talk: Prioritize evidence-based solutions. Pilot, iterate, and adapt based on real-world data. Collaboration is key: Partner with local organizations, community leaders, and beneficiaries. Shared ownership = success. Transparency matters: Communicate openly with your community. Share data, challenges, and successes. Build trust.

Vision, mission, goals - these often become paper exercises and can lack true commitment at individual, team, and organizational levels. The “real” work is the “deep” work that comes from the team process - the genuine participatory inquiry and dialogue, questioning, reviewing - and building the foundation of truly “collective” impact. This, in turn, requires an investment in time, team work, dialogue, constructive confrontation of perspectives. The definition that emerges from that goes beyond words on paper: it creates a personal team commitment to the vision, mission, and goals - whether at organizational, programmatic, or functional team levels.

I want to share my perspective on maximizing our team's impact regarding the issue. First, we need to listen to the different perspectives of our team genuinely. They need to know we have a safe place to express our ideas. It would be ineffective if we had a diverse team, but the team's atmosphere is not open to different standpoints. Second, we need to try to get the best talent with specific valuable skills to be in our team, but they better have the same value as our organization. We will have many differences, heated discussions, and critical situations. Still, as long as we have the same values, we will pass it sufficiently because we know that all the differences have the same goal and principle.

Diversity, encompassing various dimensions such as background, education, personality, and interests, indeed enriches the team's perspective and widens its reach. It promotes a culture of creativity, mitigating the risks of groupthink and encouraging multifaceted solutions. Furthermore, talent is undeniably crucial; individuals with the right knowledge, skills, and collaborative attitude are essential for executing roles effectively. However, it's imperative to ensure that diversity and talent are not seen in isolation.

De maneira bem simplista, comece observando os fatos, depois identifique como você se sente em relação a isso, em seguida analise suas necessidades, valores ou desejos (no caso de organizações, necessidades ou valores da org) e, por fim, o pedido: informe o que observou, como se sente e quais as necessidades no momento. Faça um pedido (acordo) real.

The culture of an organization or a team can be observed by the behavioral norms generally accepted and adhered to by ALL members of the group. For example, to evaluate if a group is reenforcing a culture of feedback and trust, one can simply observe how the leader(s) respond to feedback from other, whether the recipient shows open mindedness, sincerity, or being dismissive or argumentative. Building trust and feedback within any organizations or teams takes time, yet, it is THE most effective way to enhance productivity and capacity on a collective level.

O feedback é menos sobre o que a pessoa fez de certo ou errado, em um momento crítico. Devemos praticar o feedback de forma consecutiva, incluindo o reforço positivo. Lidando com uma equipe diversa, composta por pessoas de diferentes marcadores sociais da diferença, o reforço positivo é um importante instrumento de acolhimento. Foque no que pode melhorar, no que pode ser feito diferente, dos potenciais a serem desenvolvidos, mais do que nas falhas e defeitos corrigíveis.

Many social impact organizations experience resources restraints. Finding ways to motivate is a balance of creative thinking and understandings of individual members. Proper level of delegation is a proven approach to motivate. The positive outcomes from delegation often include enhanced capacity for the whole team. However, it could be challenging for managers or leaders to take initiatives to delegate because they feel uncomfortable to do so. The underlying idea of delegation is the willingness AND confidence to take risks. The risks resides some with the team as a whole while mostly on the decision makers of delegation. It will do little to push for delegation, instead, perform a risk assessment to mitigate critical risks.

Look for benchmarks and visit reference institutions. Find mentors who can help you grow in specific areas of development or challenges. Forget the shame, introduce yourself in events, raise your hand, and ask smart and genuine questions. That's the best way to be noticed and find partners and mentors. But remember: don't say something just because you want to; be wise, and also listen to people.

Be genuine and generous when collaborating and networking. Share knowledge, skills, even examples of something that did not work well from your perspectives and experiences.

Look for others who are aligned to your goals and values and amplify each others impact. No one single person or organisation can solve complex societal issues alone. Work collaboratively and share knowledge of what works and what doesn’t to make sure we keep progressing.

It's not because we are in the social impact field; technology is not a material theme in our work. Not only solutions for social impact but also solutions for managing social impact. Invest in data research and digital documentation. Artificial Intelligence can also play a critical role nowadays, from facilitating proposal, contract, and policy writing to brand and content development.

Sustainability needs to be the basis of the social impact strategy of any organisation. Oftentimes , having a short term vision implies that organisations assume that the context and the mission will remain constant. This leads to massive overspends and wasted resources, and not a lot of impact.

The foundation matters: for what kind of entity are you building this team? In what sector? In what industry? In what political, legal/policy, economic, and social contexts? The answers to these questions STRONGLY determine the kind, character, composition, and organization of a social impact team.
