You're feeling stuck in your consulting career. What steps can you take to reignite your passion?

Sometimes it’s impossible to truly see the situation you are dealing with, while you are in the middle of it. You are in the eye of the storm and not soaring above it from a Birds Eye view. Go through the steps of introspection and evaluation. Write down your thoughts. Then ask a trusted friend, coworker or mentor to give their view of things so you can have outside input on things you would not have noticed.

Self-Reflection: Assess interests and strengths. Skill Development: Acquire new skills to stay relevant. Networking: Connect with industry professionals. Mentorship: Seek guidance from experienced mentors. Diversify Projects: Explore different consulting areas. Innovation: Bring fresh ideas and approaches. Work-Life Balance: Prioritize well-being for renewed energy. Client Impact: Focus on meaningful client impact. Training Programs: Attend workshops for continuous learning. Passion Projects: Pursue projects aligning with personal passion

Firstly, consider the people, the tools and the processes that support your work. Is there something that could be changed to make your work more pleasant? We will not always be able to change them easily but we can start doing the first steps: communicating, sharing experiences and ideas. Assuming responsibility for new challenges. If the cause are not those 3 pillars, focus on your long-term objectives. In the end of the day, question yourself: am I being a leader? Am I inspiring and developing new talented people to support my growth? How can I start do it through small actions?

Exercise your networking and share experiences with your colleagues. You don't need to say you are not motivated, but you can talk to your pairs and observe if some of your feelings are also shared by other people or if you are facing a particular situation. When speaking to trustable people about your concerns and nuisances you will be also, in parallel, exercising your mind to build an action plan.

Evaluation should always be followed by education. As you explore options it’s also a great time to learn more, read more, take a course, speak to people and dive into new worlds. Even if your goals don’t change, you will have never avenues of thought and creative input that could help you level up.

One of the greatest lessons in life can be learned in the first five minutes of sitting on an airplane. The flight attendant begins the motions of the safety check showing the seatbelt and manual. Eventually they say the most powerful words you can speak about self care. “Before you out the oxygen mask on the person next to you; place the mask on yourself”. Be careful giving to your job, family, friends, or consulting ahead of giving to yourself. You are no good to others if you can’t breathe.

Remember that being a Consultant is a great opportunity to develop entrepreneurship skills. Acquire ownership for what you are doing and will have a good performance. The good performance will bring good results which will make you closed to new rewards and success.

If you’re feeling like you’ve lost your mojo it’s likely time to spending some time in personal reflection and reconnect with your “why”. Your purpose and your connection and commitment to that purpose help to drive motivation.
