You're in the middle of a fashion design project. How can you make sure you're using the best materials?

For me when it comes to Design, Ideas and Concepts, material is immaterial! I find the given topic to be somewhat ambiguous. What exactly is a "Fashion Design Project"? The entire process of concept to final product normally involves a number of skill sets and stages. And each of these stages can hold a different meaning to the person or persons involved. 1. For a Fashion Designer, The best material is creativity. Other factors such as brand and market awareness, technical knowledge etc. come secondary 2. For a Product Developer: The most important material for a PD is his own understanding of the expected product, next is clear communication to sampling team so that when a sample is being made, it turns out correctly the very first time.

Listen to the design brief ask questions before making decisions and think about the whole lifecycle of the design cradle to cradle is it fit for purpose who is the audience and what is the end life for the design? Remember loved clothes last

The key most important factor is to know your audience. Designing without the knowledge regarding the customer is risky and financially threatening. Need based designing is the new norm in testing times where sustainability is the key factor that influences buying decisions

Understanding your target audience is paramount when selecting the optimal materials for your designs. Consider their style, preferences, lifestyle, and budget, as well as their expectations and needs from your products. Delve into how they will use, wear, and maintain your creations. This insight will streamline your choices and enable you to concentrate on materials that resonate most with your audience's preferences and requirements.

Knowing the target market for your product is the first step in the design process. Having a deep knowledge of how your consumer behaves and what is their expectations from your products creates the basic foundation upon which a product is built.

Material search that too keeping in mind sustainability is a challenge. Some designs require fabric that is non sustainable or non ethically sourced. It surely requires hardwork to hunt for the best suitable ,cost effective and most trendy material to keep up with the competition

Knowledge is power. We always start from a very broad perspective, pulling inspiration from everywhere. Once you start to categorize your research, you will slowly slip into ideas that seem relevant to your specific project.

There will always be competition and every other brand will try to sell the same trends , however what truly attracts consumers is how the brand is able to communicate its ethos keeping current trends in mind. This is because any consumer while buying a product , first and foremost looks at 'what does the brand stand for?' ' Is the brand true to their values?'

Choosing the perfect materials is key to elevating your fashion design. First, understand your garment's purpose. Is it a flowy summer dress or a structured winter coat? Then, research different fabrics, their properties (drape, weight, etc.), and how they complement your design. Don't hesitate to visit fabric stores/vendor, touch the materials, and ask questions. Finally, consider sustainability - opt for natural or recycled fabrics whenever possible. Make 1/2 sample from selected material and check the durability, final look and feel of that sample.By carefully selecting materials, you'll ensure your creation not only looks stunning but also functions flawlessly.

Testing for sure is important but in times of Ai and digital design development, brands are using alternative arrangements to test and improve designs rather than making actual samples which are tend to waste if not approved

Testing materials while researching the market, can help to reduce effort as well as cost. Testing the material can also give the liberty to experiment and see what fits right for the collection, for example fabric manipulation and embroidery on it. Variation in fabric for testing can play a huge role in the final execution of the project.

I agree that testing the materials is crucial but a keeping the material quality consistent post the test approval is even more important. Sometimes you might source the best quality materials that have passed all QC checks but the product quality keeps deteriorating as the consistency is not being maintained throughout years.

Adopting Design Thinking and industry best practices ensures optimal material selection. Begin by empathizing with end-users through interviews, establishing a user-centric foundation. Ideation, in collaboration with a diverse team, explores materials considering aesthetics, sustainability, and ethical sourcing. Prototyping, a crucial Design Thinking step, allows hands-on evaluation for refinement based on practical considerations and user feedback. Engage reputable suppliers, ensuring transparent communication, samples, and collaboration for quality standards. This collaborative approach not only ensures the best materials but also fosters a symbiotic relationship with industry partners

For me it is most important to keep a check on sustainability and ethical sourcing. Buyers’ decisions are influenced highly due to these factors. We as designers can be change makers as the issue as grave as climate change cannot be addressed individually. We all have responsibility to save the world for our future generations.

Considering the sustainability of the materials is key to reduce your environmental footprint. Hence, when selecting materials,it is important to consider how the product will be used, and match durability with garment type. This means using the right textile to minimise wear, tear, stains or even the need for specialist cleaning. Natural fibres such as cotton and bamboo have a lower environmental impact than synthetic fibres such as spandax and polyester. If you adopt sustainable practices in the selection of materials, consider having your products certified organic that will generate goodwill with customers who support sustainable living. Last but not least, choose inks and dyes that are non-toxic, natural or vegetable-based.

Choosing the right material is the most crucial part as it makes or breaks your fashion project. In my opinion, keep a fabric in mind that goes with the theme and feel you’re going for, do fabric research and get as many swatches as you can to get the feel of the fabrics, do market research to get the best prices and keep the sustainability aspect in mind so you don’t contribute to the pollution.

Although I personally feel that sustainability is everything in 2024, I'm not always in a position where sustainability is important for the project brief. Where can you find a creative solution for sustainable integration? One way is through relevancy. Are you missing out on your audience by not providing sustainable elements? I also consider fibre functionality. Tencel is a sustainable fibre relative to cotton and can be much softer and cosier. Perhaps there is an alternative fibre with suitable properties that just happen to be sustainable as well.

This is indeed the most important stage of the process, as the price often serves as the ultimate validator of product sales. Balancing the cost is necessary since not every end consumer understands the fact of what they are buying. It's no use having the best price when the product is simple and of poor quality, lacking a long lifespan. However, it's also futile to burden it with costs, such as using Egyptian cotton, for example, if your target audience does not support such an input. Quality and durability are the basic items currently sought after in the pursuit of slow fashion consumption, and along with an attractive final price, they are synonymous with certainty of a completed sale.

The cost and value are determined before hand as we keep in mind the customer target market. What could be the predictions of sales and customer satisfaction on the goods w sell. At the same time keeping in mind the supporting production , sampling transportation costs and all other additional maintenance expenses.

In my experience, balancing cost and value is the most challenging aspect of design but also the most crucial part of it. With the inflation on rise consumers are constantly looking for better quality products at affordable prices. Sometimes even when you try to make best quality products it’s really difficult to put it in an economical price bracket.

1. Identify who you want to style 2. What is the concept and ideas 3. Understand your audience's body types 4. List out the materials and items needed. 5. Where can you source for the materials and items needed? 6. Get your patterns and draft together.

SHOP IN PERSON I'd skip the fabric swatches because they are likely to go to waste. Go in person to source for the fabrics, if you can. That way you can actually see the fabric for yourself and also scan through the shop to see other varieties of fabrics that can also work for the design you want to create; This way, you can check the quality and have a feel of the fabric, this should give you an idea how the fabric will feel on your client's skin. And you can bargain the price before purchasing.

Know your project and its end goal,everything else becomes secondary to this. I find knowing what you are working towards always help in narrowing down the routes you can take to enhance the project. For example if my product leans more towards artistic expression of the vision then plain functionalityof day to day wear, then clearing that end goal makes me know what my audience will be, a set of niche group who is looking for something of a statement peice,that further helps in selection of materials.Since now it is not to be made en-mass i can use materials that are bit specific or unusual.Hence knowing your project and its requirements will help you in determining the best materials for it.

Material performance must be considered in conjunction with end use; therefore, tests must be performed with the 'end use' in mind. For the majority of clothing items aesthetic and style factors provide the initial impulse of attraction and may be the principal factors which influence the decision to buy. Moreover, aspects as handle, drape, colour and style all interact in a complex manner and are influenced by social factors – a desire to be in fashion, a desire to present an image etc.

Besides the above points mentioned, it is also critical to understand what works for your brand. It is part of knowing your audience, however, one really needs to dive deep into current business trends in terms of consumer purchasing capacity and demographic success. With my experience, I can vouch for the fact that statistics change from one area to another, therefore it is absolutely crucial to study purchasing capacity with a demographic approach with focus on age groups. This will clarify and define a lot of things while planning your next design project.
