You’ve been laid off from your job. How can you make the most of your time to find a new one?

Your resume should be a reflection of not only yourself, but where you want to go. Sometimes, being laid off can be a blessing in disguise and can lead to a new career all together. Just make sure you keep it to one page and only have the most recent/relevant information.

First, do you want to stay in the computer repair field? Technology is changing so rapidly, have you kept up with your skills? As a customer engineer [with IBM] I had customers who took classes in college and computers were not their expertise, they quickly learned. In conclusion, one talent can open a whole new career path!

A resume gives the employer a first impression about you. It’s always best to make your resume to fit whatever position you’re applying for and making sure all the skills you have that are required for the job are well spoken of and highlighted as well as the certifications you may have as well as those are definitely solid proof or evidence of your skills.

Update your resume and professional profile: Spend time revising and updating your resume, highlighting your skills, experiences, and relevant accomplishments. Also, optimize your profile on professional platforms like LinkedIn to increase your visibility to recruiters and employers. Define professional goals: Reflect on your career goals and preferences, identifying the type of work and work environment you'd like to have in your next job. This will help you focus your job search efforts and make more informed decisions. Research opportunities: Investigate companies and sectors that interest you and are hiring in your field. Utilize job search websites, professional networks, and personal contacts to identify relevant job opportunities.

Take some time to evaluate your skills, strengths, and experiences. Identify areas where you excel and consider how they align with different job opportunities. Redo your resume to highlight relevant experiences and skills for the types of jobs you're interested in.

Reach out to your professional network, including former colleagues, mentors, and friends, to inform them that you are looking for a job. Attend industry events and connect with professionals on LinkedIn.

Networking with people is one of the best ways, but also the use of one's time wisely in other areas such as upskilling one's self to keep pace with the fast moving job, ever evolving world of business.

Use everything you have. And you have a lot. Search the internet for local jobs. Ask friends and family. Ask former colleagues. Call adds, no matter where you see them. And just remember, you lost a job, not your life.

Connect with old colleagues, friends, and industry contacts or mentors to let them know you're looking. Networking mixers, and online networking are good groups to expand your professional network.

One of the keys I've found is to work with folks you know in your industry and in OTHER industries who may be able to utilize your skill set. Even if these people can't hire you, they may know others looking for candidates or may be willing to help you with your resume' and Cover Letter approach. If you know anyone in an HR role, this is doubly true. Have them assist with developing a resume' approach that'll help you land the interview.

Use your time to learn new skills or improve existing ones that are relevant to your desired job. Consider taking online courses, attending workshops, or obtaining certifications.

If you find yourself in between jobs, spend some of your time reading and researching the most modern techniques in your chosen target area. Are you into Sys Admin work? Then maybe research automation scripting. Are you in Help Desk or Phone support? maybe watch a video series on customer service etiquette. If you want to move into a Lead or Management role, maybe take a look at some time management tools that might help you become a more efficient employee. That will shine brightly as you work towards your next set of goals.

With the prevalence of online courses it is easy to learn new skills and brush up on some of your lesser used ones. It is a good way to use the free time you have while looking for work. It will keep you engaged and productive. With the speed technology evolves it is a good idea to do this from time to time.

It is important to have a portfolio when searching for a job because it serves as a visual representation of your skills, experience, and abilities. A portfolio allows you to showcase your best work, projects, and achievements to potential employers in a tangible and organized manner. It provides concrete evidence of your capabilities and gives employers a better understanding of what you can bring to the table. Additionally, a well-curated portfolio can help you stand out from other candidates and leave a lasting impression on hiring managers.

One thing to consider is working with your local school district. Each district has an IT department. Start as a substitute teacher if you like it, look for a permanent position. If you don't like it you can set your own schedule while you look for another position.

I focus more on computer hardware and software but I will accept a job working with mobile phones or electronic vehicles. If I move all the way away from tech work I still offer freelance computer services. Custom builds, Repairs, unlocking devices, etc. When you are flexible it makes you a more valuable to prospective employers.

During my last unemployment run, I really kicked up my search for odd jobs and independent consulting gigs helping small to medium size businesses and non-profits with their computer and tech needs. This lead to several interviews and some unexpected successes as an Independent 1099 Contractor. The experience I gained during these jobs set me up for a higher grade position when I finally did land that interview for a permanent spot. And while you're doing this kind of work, don't undervalue your worth. I was charging $100+ per hour for the work and I still had business people telling me I should charge more for the service I was providing for them.

Apply strategically by paying attention to positions that fit your qualifications, experiences, and professional objectives rather than applying to every job you see. Tailor your application materials to each job to highlight your skills and suitability for the post.

Additionally, if you have a side hobby such as repairing technology, consider exploring platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist to find items that need fixing. Once repaired, list them for resale to leverage your talent and generate extra income.

When you get laid off, rule number 1 - Do Not Panic! I know it’s hard when you go from a “stable” paycheck to $0. Thoughts of payments, housing, food, etc start to flood your mind, and it’s overwhelming. Take a step back and breath. Take this time to reflect of what you enjoyed and what were opportunities in the work environment you were just removed from. Also take time to reflect on your performance, thoughts, and feeling you would bring to that workplace. Take ownership of your own opportunities, so that you can enter the work force again with an understanding of yourself and what you are looking for. Reflection is crucial, so that when you start interviewing, you can ask great questions to gauge if they are right for you!
