As a social worker, few things I keep in mind while engaging with the community: 1. Community Need Assessment: Understanding actual needs rather than manufactured ones. 2. Cultural Competence: Respecting the diversity of community members and tailoring my interventions to meet their unique needs. 3. Participatory Approach: Making them the part of decision making. 4. Enabling Empowerment: Promoting self-determination & collective action. 5. Youth Engagement: Most receptive to change, therefore, youth mobilization is always helpful either in advocacy or capacity building. But most important is mindset. Few social workers engage with community members acting as 'liberators' instead of 'enablers', which hampers real change.

Methodical reflection is extremely under-rated! The following are a few metrics I consider while doing self-reflection. 1. Self- assessment: Reflecting on our personal values, biases impacting our interactions with others. 2. Critical incident analysis (CIA): Reflecting on important incidents to identify lessons learned. 3. Open-minded feedback: Either from clients, colleagues, family, etc. to identify areas of improvement. 4. Multi- dimensional thinking: Like, brainstormed a scenario from multiple perspectives. I use design thinking tools like '6 Thinking Hats', 'Brain- writing', etc. 5. Daily Journaling: Useful for gaining understanding of our actions, bottlenecks and later, solutions that promote personal growth as well.

One thing i find helpful is keeping a personal journal. You might think reflection?! Not this thing again! 😮💨😨 Something constantly shoved down the throat of every student from higher education... However, there are so many small bits of things we do in our role that it is impossible to keep track! Therefore, keep a journal. You dont need to write your feelings etc it depends on what you want to do with it... but at the very minimum, just write what you did. For example, i shadowed staff in an assessment meeting involving etc... i documented x y z . It is these points you will then look over in a few weeks time and think oh yea i did this! And im getting better at it now....

In India, the social sector is changing rapidly. From a financial perspective, CSR activities have increased manifold ($8 billion CSR money poured in the last 10 years) , foreign donations have reached $2.5 B as well, which led to the influx of MBAs & Consulting organizations in this space. The 'Corporatization' of the social sector is undergoing, which will have some implications: 1. Data driven decision making neglecting the 'individuality' which is a core tenant of social work. 2. Competitive behavior & outcome mindset instead of ensuring quality & gaining satisfaction. 3. Higher salaries & more jobs in the future in this space. Coming 10 years is extremely crucial which will decide the approach of professional social work in India.
