People with living experience often know the answers right away and the best approach to find the solutions needed.

In my experience, practicing self care is work in progress at all times! The work we do in social change in not linear. The risk of burnout is often just around the corner. For me recognising the signs of potential burnout has become one of the skills I’m nurturing, with compassion and care. In this way I can be fully engaged in my work and at the same time be aware of when it’s time to look after myself more.

You can acknowledge and appreciate the positive changes and impacts that you have made or contributed to in addressing systemic barriers and social justice issues. This is a crucial part of our social change work and yet, in my opinion, it is also one of the most neglected parts too. Naturally our focus is often on “what remains to be done” as opposed to what we have achieved. From small wins to big wins we need to make more conscious efforts to celebrate without becoming complacent. In turn not only our motivation will get a boost but our well-being will also improve with more positivity in our lives.
