How can survey research evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions in developing countries?

When it comes to Turkey, we should do cross-border considerations, such as the refugee crisis, assess how initiatives would affect both host communities and those who have been displaced.

Sampling can be challenging in developing countries. For example, I was working on a study evaluating women's perception on reproductive health in Afghanistan. I planned for individual sampling and realized that different geographical areas have different services available and ended up going for cluster sampling.

Online survey often do not reach the maximum population or capture the diversity entirely in developing countries as internet access is limited in rural areas. We have to keep that in mind when designing the survey instrument.

I agree with the above. Data needs to collected from the sample identified using the reliable and valid instrument/survey questionnaire. The survey questionnaire should provide clear cut and unambiguous instructions to the respondents clearly bringing out the purpose of the research and end usage of the data collected. The instructions should include importance of the research and need for honest responses to the questions and also that the responses will be held in strict confidence.

Getting accurate data is as important as getting complete response from respondents. Missing values should be avoided to the bearest minimum. Ethical clearance, approval and consent forms should be place at the beginning of the questionnaire for participant to accept before answering the questions. These help in litigation process.

To analyze data, start by cleaning and organizing the dataset. Calculate descriptive statistics for a summary, use exploratory analysis to visualize patterns, and apply inferential statistics for broader conclusions. I agree with the above. Data collected using the survey is raw and needs to be edited, coded, transcribed, cleaned, and prepared for its analysis. It is essential to use appropriate statistical tools to analyse the data prepared. For example we may use SPSS and AMOS Statistics software for data analysis and interpretation of results.

In as much as the data are collected accurately and correctly. The next step is selecting the right tools for the analysis such as R and python or even less complicated ones like Excel. Know the type of analysis to do, from easy percentage, frequency table, measure of dispersion and central tendency to ANOVA, Principal components analysis and even structural modelling analysis. Data visualization is another important key.

However, it failed to provide a specific answer as to how can survey research evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions in developing countries. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention, at least two measurements with the same instrument are required: at least one before the intervention and another one after, depending on the research question. Secondly, since public health interventions are usually of a broad application, one must ensure the reproducibility of the intervention by standardized protocols. Finally, a control intervention without effectiveness can provide insights of the research bias. This is a critical step.

Survey tools and persons conducting the survey in public health in developing countries/communities will most likely influence the validity of the research findings. There is a trust and confidence issue at play. If the community do not trust the person doing the survey, you are most likely not going to get accurate data. Most people in such communities may not be interested in anything written even if it's in their language, focus group discussions of specific groups of people may suffice better. Endorsement of a researcher by a religious leader, community leader etc, may make a researcher's work more worthwhile, it's worth investing first in seeking the people's trust and confidence.

Longitudinal studies and cost-effectiveness analyses contribute to a holistic evaluation, while qualitative insights deepen the understanding of contextual factors. Survey research is a flawed methodology, because it is self-reporting and there's no way to check for veracity in the responses. Questions are often framed to elicit specific answers with a certain bias. Even if open-ended questions are used, one would not only require huge sample size but also test for skew and kurtosis, especially in public health interventions where there's a lot of political bias. Unfortunately, public health interventions in developing countries are mostly dictated by lobbies of developed countries and WHO.

Surveys are always on going as they need to be updated for the research findings and research recommendations. One needs to define the sample and the people it is reaching out it. Is it free from biases or is for the government or by the government authority? If it is not ,then it needs to be free from biases to turn it accordingly to what the data collections determine.
