I recommend relying on reputable sources like Google Scholar and Pubmed. Please don't blindly trust information just because it appears on multiple websites. It could still be incorrect. The type and credibility of the source should take precedence in your evaluation.

For scientific writing, I usually stick to a few categories of sources. These include: ~ Peer-reviewed journals (preferably with an impact factor above a 5) ~ Government health agency websites (CDC, NIH, NSF) ~ National academies, associations, and societies (American Heart Association, American Academy of Dermatology)

In my view, it is not a good idea to challenge the source with personal experience. Principally if the writer is non native to English language and the source that he is using is originating from developed countries. As the writer's writing is influenced by personal experience. For example, in Pakistan, it is believed that hygiene means wearing neat clothes. The fact that picking your nose and then shaking unwashed hands escapes their minds. Does then picking nose and then shaking hands makes it a hygienic habit? It does not.
