I have a really relevent annecdote: I recently took part in a 4000km unsupported bike race, I had to carry everything I would need, except food and water. I ended up with a total packed bike weight of 16kg, while many other people had bikes weighing in excess of 25kg. Invariably, I finished ahead of those people with heavy bikes.
