How can you use servant leadership in agile environments?

In my experience Agile Leadership is working with a flexible and knowledgeable group of people. When I say 'working' it is more about tuning and transmitting the Agile wavelength to the group. As a leader I always have to envision Customer thoughts and needs and set the correct frequency so that our approach delivers maximum value in shortest time. From my Product development perspective, many a times Customers have a long list of needs and may not always have a good priority list. We as partners and leaders should show centricity and help logical MVPs. Such leadership traits are always helpful for Agile Leaders.

Think of it like this: We're not here to command from the top, we're here to serve our teams. We're empowering them to make decisions, opening up lines of communication so everyone's heard, and turning every challenge into a lesson learned. And when things get tough, we step in, clearing the path so they can do what they do best. It's about not just being their coach, but also their biggest fan and a dedicated problem-solver. That's how I see the harmony of Agile and servant leadership.

Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enrich the lives of individuals, build better organizations, and ultimately create a more caring world. The servant leader is a servant first, which means their focus is primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities to which they belong. The servant leader shares power, puts the needs of others first, and helps people develop and perform to the best of their abilities. They're not in it for the personal glory or power. Instead, they want to help their team members thrive and succeed. This approach can lead to higher engagement, more trust, and stronger teams who care not just for the results but also for each other.

Servant leadership is a transformative leadership style that centers on serving the needs and aspirations of followers rather than the leader's own agenda. It's about putting your team first, helping them grow, and clearing their path. So, being a servant leader in Agile is like being a super-helper, always there for your team, ready to adapt and get things done. That's how servant leadership supports Agile.

When failure comes you take responsibility. When sucess comes you give it to your team. Serve them not yourself, help them be the best.

Trust your team - let them make decisions. Talk a lot - open chats help solve problems. Learn from everything - good or bad, there's always a lesson. Help your team - if there's a roadblock, you're there to remove it. And that's it! That's being a servant leader in Agile.

Servant leadership in my perspective working for as an agile coach for years is about leading with purpose, expectation, and leading happy graceful. It's about being a leader that is able and willing to be a servant to others. Its about leading by example with influence to inspire, motivate, encourage and most important enrich others. A servant leader cares about others and puts the needs of others first, and helps develop people so that they can perform to the best of their abilities.

In addition to adopting a servant mindset and behavior, practicing servant leadership in agile environments also requires embracing flexibility and adaptability. Agile methodologies emphasize responding to change and collaborating with individuals with diverse perspectives. As a servant leader, you should encourage a culture of continuous learning and improvement, fostering an environment where team members feel comfortable experimenting, taking risks, and learning from failures. This means creating psychological safety, where everyone feels valued and respected, enabling open communication and constructive feedback. By facilitating an atmosphere of trust and openness, you empower your team to innovate and find creative solutions.

When you're a servant leader, you understand and care for your team's needs. This makes you more emotionally smart. Plus, in Agile, you're helping your team, not just directing them. This earns you trust and respect, making you a better leader. So, with servant leadership, you're a wiser, more effective leader - it's a win-win!
