Group dynamics are an effective methodology to estimulate creative and critical thinking. 1. Make sure you gather a multidisciplinar group to cover all the angles; 2. There should be a moderator, to allow everyone to step in, and prevent the most dominant profiles to take control; 3. The decision-maker should close the session with a decision. These processes tend to be more time-consuming than regular decising-making processes. Should only be used for high impact decisions.

Something that has been beneficial for me is by setting clear guidelines for communication and participation, like being respectful, listening actively, and making sure everyone gets a chance to speak. Regular check-ins can ensure everyone is satisfied.

In my experience, I never met the situation where group had to come to decision which is a crucial at the very moment. If we are talking about business which needs to rely on group's decision and at the end fails because of that decison, then who is responsible for the failure? The best practise is to make the group to believe that they came to decision to be followed by business owners, another point of such an involvment is a great feeling of being useful and it leads to rising of motivation level of a group. Non of owners will be agree to loose the fonds or to get a risk based on common discussions, except if it is a group of professionals specialising on decison making via using their experience and specific information.

Ultimately we can tap into the wisdom of teams, but only if we are intentional in the way we manage the dynamics.

What I have come to learn is that in group settings, active participation is crucial to influence decision-making. It's all too common for decisions to reflect the views of a select few when not everyone has had a chance to express their perspectives.

Group dynamics is one of the key success factor in any organisation. Let’s try to understand with an example. I was leading enterprise business for a telecom company. My team constituted of people from sales, marketing, solution, service, delivery and technology. Our stakeholders were: Client, Competition, Partners, other functions. So our team had to collaborate a lot. Most important was weekly, sometimes daily team interlock, I also used to be part of it. We had a strong governance and team had role clarity.Also we had a collaborative tool (like salesforce). To summarise, goal and objective need to be deliberated, communicated and clear to all. Need to have a schedule and strong review mechanism so that client gets what he wants.

In my experience, useful insights into the significance of group dynamics for decision-making can be drawn from rhetorical analysis as well as political process/ voting/ democratic systems analysis. When you realise how stages are set, who is allowed to speak for how long and why, how much a single vote weigh in a final result depending on particular electoral law, the role of implicatures in persuasive speech, how underprivileged groups are cunningly marginalised through measures as simple as making it difficult for them to even attend etc., you will slowly but surely start to notice the small-scale counterparts of such processes in your workplace or community.

”Change hats” Adding to what Jon said, challenge the group to change perspectives. Usually we all lean towards some kind of profile. Some of us are more optimistic, some more risk averse, etc… With a developed group, is healthy to ask the members to switch hats from time to time. An awesome tool to use is the ”6 Thinking Hats”, created by Edward de Bono. Also what helps improving is by reflecting on the decision and its consequences (as a group). Looking on what happened, are we sill happy with our decision? What we would like to do differently?

Two very simple and often overlooked aspects: 1. Ensure there is a foundation of trust, respect and psychological safety, 2. Create the space for constructive debate, dissent and discussion. Embrace conflict, encourage challenge and stay curious. Get these bits right and much of the rest will take care of itself. Try to have a debate without foundational trust and safety and observe what that does to decision-making (as well as relationships, culture etc.)

There's only one way to improve your decision making. that is: experience. And useful experience often comes from making mistakes. So in theory: to improve is by making a lot of painful mistakes in decision making, and contemplate.

La toma se decisión creo es un punto en el que se vuelve cada vez más crítico. Hoy los empleados buscan y quieren poder dar su opinión, pero al mismo tiempo no están todos lo suficiente empoderados para reconocer pueden tomar esas decisiones. Por eso creo vital, que las decisiones grupales pueden ser la solución a ese conflicto. Los líderes deben abrir y hacer posibles estos espacios de colaboración y diversidad, para que entre todos en un grupo lleguen a la mejor decisión posible.

One simple action you can take as a team is to keep a 'decision log'. Capture the key decisions you have made as a team, a little context on why the decision was made and what alternatives you explored and/or discounted. Then track the outcome of the decision, come back to it periodically and identify lessons both in terms of the process and the outcome itself. The added benefit of tracking and reviewing your biggest decisions is that you may have the opportunity to change and/or adapt your decision as you learn new information as your decision rubber hits the real-world road

One of the techniques that really helped me is to draw a Decision Graph* for your life. Take a piece of A3 paper, draw a line across it horizontally which represents time, from your early life (left) to today (right). Now add to the page your big life and work decisions across time (which go above the line for good decisions and below the line for bad decisions). Around each decision write some notes on how you made that decision. Then look at the pattern of 'hows' for your good and bad decisions. For example, this exercise surfaced the importance of writing down my values 12 years ago - ever since then my decisions have been better. *Credit to the School of Life for this.

Over the years, I've found that refining decision-making skills is akin to honing any other craft - it requires practice, feedback, and introspection. One invaluable habit I cultivated was the practice of post-decision reflection. By dedicating time to analyze the outcomes of decisions and comparing them to initial expectations, I could identify gaps, learn from them, and continuously iterate my decision-making process. Such reflective practices, when done consistently, can significantly elevate one's decision-making acumen.

Tips for better group decision-making: Prevent groupthink: Recognize the signs of groupthink and promote open discussion and consideration of all options. Minimize social loafing: Foster individual accountability by assigning specific tasks and tracking their completion. Manage dominant behavior: Encourage equal participation with techniques like round-robin brainstorming and anonymous voting. Encourage diverse perspectives: Create an inclusive environment where diverse ideas and viewpoints are valued, avoiding assumptions about members' beliefs and values.

Examine the context of your work and communicate that understanding to your team. Often team members do not align with an action because they have another solution in mind which better meets the KPIs they can see. On the other hand their leader proceeds on another pathway because s/he is following another KPI. Understanding the context of your work will not only breed mutual understanding but also groom them to be better candidates to take up these responsibilities in future.

A few tips for people managers to enable positive group dynamics:- 1.Defining a North Star & guiding tenets to have shared goals, unify the group's vision/ understanding of the end-state and effectively prioritize, tie-break dilemmas. 2.Establishing and atmosphere of respect, trust and psychological safety. 3.Encouraging healthy debates with a mindset to learn from varying perspectives and despite any (initial) disagreement, committing gracefully to the final group decision 4.Providing support structure (guide/train/coach), celebrating wins, etc. 5.Communicating with purpose. 6.Empathy & inclusivity: Ex: If someone sounds unwell & you know about, by the end of the call/checkin, a short 'take care, feel better' goes a long way. :)

Group dynamics can either result in poor or good decisions. The interaction has to be coordinated and managed to get the best out of it; this is because human beings are diverse and unique,so its important to motivate for inclusive approaches that accomodate the different characters. It's common mistake to run with views of the loudest, however that makes one miss valuable contribution from the not so loud personas. A fair moderator for the group should be able to close these gaps by using techniques that support everyone to express themselves.For example, if I'm facilitating training I have to ensure the environment is conducive for all to speak without ridicule or being disrespected.

I totally agree with a decision log. It’s critical. We use an A3 (see Lean Enterprise Institute) We also start with a 5 Why exercise to actually get to the root problem (s). Ensure the people doing the work participate. Respect & trust are the culture that should be established.
