Motor torque control requires pressure control. The above solutions describe flow diversion. A more efficient way is to only produce the flow required and control the pressure. This can be done by: 1. pressure control at the variable pump 2. drive a fixed displacement pump with a servo-motor. Use a pressure sensor and control system to drive the pump only fast enough to control the pressure. Such systems are readily available today and are very efficient. 3. some variable displacement motors are capable of controlling the displacement with a given pressure in order to control output torque. 4. proportional pressure reducing valves can also be used, but the reduced pressure is turned into heat; therefore, not as efficient.
