What are the best strategies for developing countries to retain skilled workers?

The Education of a Nation is not a lone body in The Nation. This being said, I believe that this is where trustworthy governance comes in. To retain skilled workers in a developing country, the government plays a vital role in the sense that they need to make the necessary trainings available and affordable for her citizens. Then, quality assurance! I will definitely leave for Canada if indeed their Coca-Cola is best in comparison to the one in Nigeria. Don't give your citizens crap!

Developing countries should change the content of the educational process where it focuses mainly on theoretical education and old theories. Converting the education process to keep up with the continuous developed labor market requirements and technology advancement will produce new generation of high skilled labor.

Investing in growth opportunities comes on top. The biggest reason for emigration is the poor quality of life. The government should not only invest in the basic amenities but also in quality things that are needed to live a better life.

Retaining skilled workers and knowing that they are the real assests for a country or a company is essential for developing country or a company in a change phase and a point change management has to consider and plan for it.

When we started there was lake of finding skills young artisans, now they young youth come to learn because of the high salaries because of the high demand from the local brand's manufacturing pottery. The artisans needs a constant demand and visionary businessess sustain the demand and improve the quality and designs

Many Nigerians leaving for countries like the UK, US, and Canada would rather stay in Nigeria if the environment provided opportunities for growth and offered maximum returns on the investment they've made in themselves. People yearn to thrive in an environment that respects basic human rights, upholds laws with consequences for actions, ensures safety under the law and government protection. Nigerians aren't lazy; they simply lack access to opportunities and infrastructure that would allow them to be their best selves. So, investing in education is not enough for developing countries. People need access to opportunities and a conducive environment. Without any of these things in place, brain drain will persist.

To retain skilled workers in the country and avoid the brain drain, few things can be offered to keep such caliber. 1) Grant property rights that can make those people feel safe at home. 2) Offer flexible tax treatment that take into consideration that part of their income is generated from offering services abroad. 3) Develop flexible banking procedures that allow those skilled workers to deal with international companies in a flexible manner. 4) Provide recognition to those skilled workers in their home countries so that they feel they didn't miss much by staying and not getting foreign citizenship. And above all, realize that such caliber is the real asset of the country and the only hope for the country to develop.

Apart from the relatively fair remuneration, I believe many Nigerian intellectuals who were schooled in the West in the 1980s opted to return home because they believed they would be a part of a nation-building effort. Most intellectuals will forgo hefty salaries abroad, if there is a sense of fairness and the belief that their input would be valued at home. But that can only be ensured if there is a blueprint in which they can fit in and contribute. Most developing countries, however, lack this. There is little regard for scholarly counsel in governance, and policies are made by charlatans. Also, the large-scale corruption and bloated political class poses a problem to fairness.

I quite agree with this. One key to retaining brains and skills is following through and being consistent in policy making. Policies aimed at developing talents and training people's for entrepreneurial skills must not be real, genuine and must be implemented. This will over the years boost people's believe in the government and its policies and they will be willing to wait in the country to contribute their own quota.

If the domestic conditions are not right, developing countries will continue to educate their citizens for export.
