What are the best ways to apply research in executive coaching?

I use a lot of research in neuroscience, leadership, psychology and behavior change with my clients. Some strategies and tools are outdated based on new research and I don't want to be using strategies that are disproven. This is no different than professional sports coaches who are adapting to new rules, what analytics has shown to be more effective and evolving their style to fit their players. I want to deliver the best experience and opportunities for my clients to reach their goals and I need to be evolving to do that.

Theory only goes so far. Research is a way to test and prove what actually works and doesn’t. And for some clients, research is that extra piece of validation that helps them make a choice to move forward. Plus, reviewing new research helps coaches stay curious and open to new ideas - which always benefits our clients.

The key phrase here is "evidence-based" versus "this is cool" and sadly there is a lot of people (not just coaches) citing "cool" information that isn't grounded in much qualitative evidence. When a coach uses research in their work (on or offline) it's an extension of themselves and their brand. They are telling the world, "I believe this to be true so..." and people will read it and assume you have given it your stamp of approval. Be careful and be intentional about the research you use. Make sure it's backed by a credible source and then research that source. Is it peer-reviewed? Does the research source it's sources? Don't fall for the flashiest graph or piece of marketing.

I always find reputable, usable, evidence-backed research from sources such as McKinsey, Gartner, IOC, Deloitte and a few others. I stay clear of online magazines and companies I have never heard of and have no history of providing legitimate and consistent information. The sites that usually have "The Top X in Coaching or Leadership" are typically paid for advertising and not based on anything credible.

I think is crucial to stay connected to people and the environments you are serving. Most of the time just listening and having empathy, putting yourself in someone else's shoes is the best research you can access. I found out that volunteering work gives you access to a lot of data and study cases, that you can further use in your work with clients. I do listen to podcasts, and interviews with experts from time to time. I have mentors whom I follow regularly. But empathic listening is the missing link imho.

When applying any research seek to have it accompany your original thought and theme of your written document. Use the research intentionally and strategically to embolden your point and compliment your aim. The opposite happens when someone piggy backs their entire article, piece or presentation on the research and adds little of their own perspective. Find the balance and use the research to support you not the other way around.

Tailor your research focus to match the specific needs of your clients. Understand their industry, challenges, and organizational context to apply relevant and targeted research findings. Seamlessly integrate research-backed strategies and techniques into your coaching sessions. Use evidence-based approaches to address specific challenges your clients are facing.

I think the application of research has to do 100% with creativity and innovation. As a coach you need to have a constant flow of ideas and connections between challenges you are faced with and the right tools to fix them. I personally use the #seedsystem in my coaching practice. It is a system based on an ancient tradition that survived for millennia. It gives a clear map of identifying the cause based on the results. If the causes are active in your daily habits, the results (good or bad) will be present. If you want to get rid of a problem, we identify its causes and do a plan on how to lessen the cause. Vice versa for the positive results you want to happen.
