What do you do if a client asks for advice beyond a Life Coach's expertise?

Acknowledging limits isn't about ego, it's about understanding, empathy, and consideration for the client. Always doing what's best for them and putting their interests first. This needs to be done at the initial stage of working with a client. Contracting about what is included in coaching and what is not. What areas you deal with and those you don't, and assess whether you can meet the client's needs or if they require another service.

If you are asked about something outside of your area, make it clear that this is not your area of expertise. You can provide general guidelines, and the best advice is to ask if it is oke to refer them to someone who is an expert.

I have very often where people approach me for help. Many of the times it's beyond the job of a life coach what's needed. The most important thing a coach can do is to help a person. That means both by knowing his boundaries as well as helping people to take the next step.

All great coaches have a list of referral partners, people who work in adjacent fields, people they trust and know they can comfortably refer to. When a client asks for help outside you area, this is the perfect time to pull up that list. If you don't have this list, I'd suggest you create it.

A client's question can highlight areas where further knowledge could enhance your coaching practice. While it's important not to provide advice on the spot without full understanding, taking the initiative to educate yourself in those areas is valuable. Too many people get stuck because outside influences color their decision-making, when deep down they know what is right for them. Circle back to their goals and values, ask probing questions, gently push back on irrational beliefs, and encourage them to listen to their internal guidance. People can and should find their own path; as coaches our job is simply to help them clear the debris and foster better clarity, so they can choose with confidence.

Encouraging clients to seek specialized advice should be framed as a collaborative effort, not a weakness. Remind them that everyone has unique strengths and it's okay to ask for help when necessary. Offer to support them alongside the specialist they choose, providing complementary guidance towards their broader life goals. This approach fosters a supportive environment where clients feel empowered and understood, navigating complex issues with comprehensive support and expertise. It reinforces the idea that seeking assistance is a proactive step towards personal growth and success.

If clients desire advice, I honestly respond that "I have absolutely no experience in this area" and invite the client to brainstorm how the they might find expertise outside of coaching sessions. If there is resistance or frustration to this, that is an excellent coaching topic! Sometimes I will "take off the coaching hat" and offer some thoughts *from a personal viewpoint*, making it very clear that the coaching hat is off. Many clients want a "different perspective", so I will readily offer what I see/hear/sense - always asking for the client's thoughts afterward. Does this perfectly follow a traditional coaching session structure? Probably not, and this is ok! Allow your client to lead, and allow for flexibility in your sessions.
