Therefore, it is prudent to prioritize few core aspects of data engineering, such as data governance, data quality, and inevitably foundational machine learning, alongside a solid understanding of SQL, which will remain relevant despite the dynamic changes in the field.

Assessing your current skills is the initial step in updating your data engineering expertise. Utilize online platforms like Kaggle, Coursera, or DataCamp to partake in quizzes, tests, or courses gauging proficiency in data processing, modeling, pipelines, quality, warehousing, and visualization. There are people whose data engineering skills stopped developing 15 years ago. They can write SQL and that's it. The mere mention of cloud pipeline or data lake makes them nervous. Let alone python or key vault. Luckily today there are technologies which are SQL based like dbt and Snowflake, where all you need to do is write SQL.
