When communication issues impact management in Coaching & Mentoring, I like to introduce some creative fixes. Then, there's the "No-Tech Talk" rule, where we ditch gadgets for face-to-face conversations in our meetings once a week. It's surprising how this boosts genuine interaction. Also, I'm a fan of "Listening Tours," where team members shadow colleagues from different departments to see the broader company landscape. These strategies have not only enhanced our communication but also brought our team closer, making our work environment more effective and enjoyable.

If a lack of openness continues to be an issue, anonymous surveys can serve as a helpful tool. You can use these to understand the difficulties your team members are facing. With their consent, sharing these struggles can foster empathy, as team members realize they are not alone in their challenges. It's also crucial to set a positive tone as a leader. Avoid negative talk about your team, even in what may seem like a safe environment. Nothing creates toxicity faster than a leader gossip or a is a bully. Always lead by example.

Implement regular check-ins or team meetings to facilitate discussions and ensure everyone is on the same page regarding goals, expectations, and progress. Provide training or workshops on active listening, conflict resolution, and effective communication techniques to enhance interpersonal skills within the team. Clear channels for feedback and constructive criticism should also be established, creating a supportive environment where team members feel valued and heard.

Communication is judged by the receiver. If communication is bad or isn't working then this is down to the sender and their methods and all intent. When planning communication encourage thought and reflection about the intent and the result required on the back of it as well as putting work into understanding the different personality and communication styles of the people within your team. Also, instead of thinking purely of communication which is often replaced by broadcasting information, try to consider this as a conversation instead. Conversations don't have to be synchronous face to face activities; instead create an engaging conversation about what it was you were looking to communicate and you will find that you get better results.
